“The basis for all human relationships is communication, but communication is not merely the ability to speak or understand words; it is the ability to connect emotionally with another.”

Anyone else struggling out there?

I am with you.

Here is a exercise I created that I frequently share with my clients. (And I am practicing it today):

Self-Soothing Toolkit:

I want you to start by looking for different items to pull in 1 or 2 senses to ground/soothe.

So reflect and make a list. Write at least one for each sense:

1. Smell (e.g. scented oil in your purse)
2. Tactile/Touch (e.g. petting your dog)
3. Sight (e.g. looking at a picture of a loved one)
4. Sound/Hearing (e.g. early morning birds singing; making/listening to an inspiring playlist)
5. Taste (e.g. savoring a hot beverage)

Start practicing with 1-2 of these things routinely (when you are NOT upset).

This will make it easier to pull from when you are flooded.

*Today, there is no better pick me up than my morning coffee and Tom Petty*

May 2025, Ushering in Mental Health Awareness Month! Since I love some good old fashioned Narrative Therapy, let’s have story time: Summer 2010. You wouldn’t know it, but these pictures were taken during one of the hardest times of my life. I was freshly single in NYC and living on my own (ALONE...

An invitation for Q & A:

(The Teaching Journeys Podcast) and I are coming back with our fourth episode … but this time it will be a duo episode. My delightful colleague and long term (we won’t speak to the age of the photo) friend, Allison Lefkowitz, will be joining us to discuss the ins and outs of the “Trauma Bond.”

We will be peeling apart the layers of and focusing in on how to recognize, understand and heal from this unhealthy relationship dynamic.

We are hoping to hone in on your stories and curiosities!

Please message me with experiences and questions so we can make this episode as
meaty as possible.

Greetings from behind the scenes of a therapist in private practice!

I would like to clarify a few things.

Our workdays are not glamorous or relaxing. To be clear, being an effective therapist is NOT “just listening to people complain.” It takes quite a bit of emotional space and mental stamina to be fully present, to ask the right questions, to intervene appropriately and to do all of that in the best way for each particular client.

Then add in (not an exhaustive list): record keeping, documentation, billing, planning for sessions, continuing education and training, peer supervision, and most importantly maintaining our own health so we can be fully present and grounded for our clients…

****

Which brings me to all of my peers…

****

To my fellow mental health warriors,

This is a great list to check yourself against to see how well you are doing in putting yourself in peak “therapizing” condition! 😉
