Happy Thanksgiving! When you're done with your feast, here's an easy health tip: Don't throw away the turkey carcass! It's valuable for stock, or better yet, bone broth!
Why bother when you can buy broth? First of all, bone broth isn’t cheap—probably $8 or $9 a quart. Don’t pay that when you’re on the verge of creating an easy three quarts!
Second of all, bone broth is incredibly good for you! Here’s why:
- It’s rich in nutrients!
- The collagen in bone broth supports joint health!
- It aids digestion and gut health!
- It boosts your immune system!
- Promotes healthy skin, hair, and nails!
HERE'S YOUR SUPER EASY RECIPE!
You can make bone broth on the stove, but you’re going to simmer it for at least 24 hours. So, if you have a slow cooker, grab it.
Clean the skin and meat off the turkey bones. Don’t worry about a little left here and there.
Put the bones in the crock pot with:
- 3 or 4 peppercorns
- 1 or 2 carrots cut into large chunks
- 1 onion cut into quarters (you can even leave the sun on)
- 1 or 2 celery stalks cut into large chunks
- 1 garlic clove
- 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar
Cover with water
Put it on low and forget about it.
When you have some free time in a couple of days, turn it off, strain it out, and refrigerate the broth. Freeze what you won’t use in a week.
After the broth is chilled, scrape the layer of fat off of the top. It will be more than rich enough without the extra fat.
TIPS:
- My family doesn’t love the meaty smell throughout the house, so I plug the crock pot in the garage.
- Drink 8 oz a day or so for the health benefits above.
- Not into drinking bone broth? That’s cool, you can use it to make a super rich soup.
- Prefer a milder tasting broth? Leave out the cider vinegar; you’ll have a lovely broth in just a few hours: 8–24 hours on low for the richest flavor, or on high for 4–6 hours.
Enjoy the holiday! Make it wonderful for you and yours!
