“Only 3 Months? U.S. Tightens Visa Rules for Nigerians — Here’s Why It Matters”

If you—or someone you love—plans to travel to the U.S., please read this.

⸝

It used to be simple. You applied for a U.S. visa, and if you were lucky, you got 2 years. Sometimes 5. You could breathe easy, make plans, attend weddings, visit kids, go to school.

But now?

🎟️ It’s just 3 months. One trip. That’s it.

This week, many Nigerians got the shock of their lives when they received their U.S. visas—only to find they were valid for just 90 days. Not only that… it’s single entry. Meaning once you go and come back, that visa is done.

⸝

💭 “Why is this happening?”

According to the U.S. government, it’s about “reciprocity”.

In simple terms: Nigeria doesn’t give Americans long-term, multiple-entry visas—so the U.S. says it won’t give us either.

But here’s the thing: this isn’t just about fairness. This is about real people with real plans, real dreams, and real responsibilities across borders.

⸝

👂🏽 Real Voices, Real Impact

🧕🏾 A young woman finally got into grad school in the U.S.

“They gave me 3 months. How do I plan a two-year program on a three-month visa?”

👴🏽 A grandfather hoping to meet his first grandson in Atlanta

“My daughter’s due next month. I’m scared I won’t even make it in time.”

👩🏽‍💼 A businesswoman with U.S. clients

“Now I’ll need to apply for a new visa every single time? It’s draining.”

⸝

🔐 What’s Beneath the Surface?

Some insiders say this is about more than visas.
Nigeria was recently listed among countries the U.S. sees as “not fully cooperative” on security and immigration protocols. That means they’re tightening controls — and we’re feeling it.

In other words, it’s not just policy. It’s a trust issue. And Nigerians are paying the price.

⸝

⚠️ What You Should Know

✔️ If you already have a long-term U.S. visa, it’s still valid until it expires.
❌ If you’re applying now, expect a 3-month, single-entry visa.

⸝

🤝 Can This Be Reversed?

The U.S. says it’s open to reviewing this if Nigeria changes its visa rules for Americans.

But honestly? This is bigger than tit-for-tat politics.

This is about dignity. This is about mobility. This is about making sure Nigerians—students, workers, parents—can live and move with respect.

*Edo Govt Commends ENAW on Inauguration of Dialysis and Diagnostic Centre, Urges Increased Diaspora Investment*_…facility to boost healthcare access, create jobs and spur infrastructure growth — Dr. Lorreta Ogboro-Okor_*By Violet Obamwonyi & Precious Nwaeke*The Edo State Government has lauded the Edo National Association Worldwide (ENAW) for establishing a state-of-the-art Dialysis and Diagnostic Laboratory Centre in Benin City, calling it a milestone in diaspora-driven development and a beacon of hope for improved healthcare delivery in the region. The commendation was made on Friday, 13th June 2025, during a facility tour led by Dr. Loretta Oduware Ogboro-Okor, the pioneer Director General of the Edo State Diaspora Agency together with team. Expressing her gratitude on behalf of the Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, Dr. Ogboro-Okor emphasized the administration’s dedication to fostering stronger ties with Edo indigenes abroad and supporting their efforts to invest back home. She highlighted the significance of the new centre, noting its advanced medical technologies and strong community impact.Furthermore, the Director General reiterated the Government’s commitment to partnering with diaspora-led initiatives, urging more Edo people in the diaspora to emulate ENAW’s impactful investment in the healthcare and community development. According to Dr. Ogboro-Okor, “I would like to acknowledge the pivotal role of the Edo people in the diaspora for funding this centre. On behalf of the state Government, Senator Monday Okpebholo, I extend my heartfelt appreciation for this wonderful edifice.”She added, “I have always told people that the people in the diaspora have been working, both at the national and sub-national level. The establishment of this Dialysis and Diagnostic Centre by ENAW is a true testament to the unwavering commitment of Edo people in the diaspora to the development of our state.” “This facility will not only deliver vital healthcare services but will also create employment and stimulate infrastructural development in our local communities.” “With its latest equipment and efficient turnaround times for diagnostic results, this Centre sets a new benchmark for healthcare delivery in Edo State.”Assuring them of the Governor’s support for the continued success of the Dialysis Centre, she mentioned, “We will work with the Centre to ensure it operates with no interruptions.”While praising the initiative, the Director General also acknowledged ongoing challenges, particularly with power supply, stressing on the need for a comprehensive solution to some of the challenges faced by the Centre. She appealed, “Reliable electricity is critical for life-saving dialysis treatment. Given its importance, efforts are ongoing to secure power from the Benin Electricity Development Corporation (BEDC) and secure further funding and expand the reach of dialysis.”“We vow to continue working with the relevant authorities to address these concerns,” she assured.Leading the team on the guided tour, Engr. Mrs. Bose Oviasu, the first female National President of ENAW, acknowledged the collaboration of the diaspora in funding the facility. She reiterated her long-term goal of establishing dialysis centres across all three senatorial districts of Edo State as part of her campaign promises, thus facilitating easy access to dialysis treatment for residents and alleviating the need for long travels to other states for such medical services. Engr. Oviasu detailed the facility's features, which include a 12-unit dialysis wing equipped with cutting-edge Fresenius Medical Care machines such as the 6008 CAREsystem, 5008S CorDiax, and 4008S Classix, emphasizing that the Centre is designed not only to serve kidney patients but also provide general diagnostics to the people. According to the President, “The Centre offers a wide range of laboratory services at heavily discounted rates with patients paying just 40% of the actual cost, which is far less than what they ought to pay. This is a full-blown laboratory set up by ENAW in Edo state. We urge Edo people to own thia facilities and take advantage of the quality care it provides.”She continued, “Our vision is facilitate accessibility, we are already planning similar projects in Okpella, Igueben or Irrua.” “This facility belongs to all Edo people and we encourage everyone to utilize and protect it.”She also acknowledged the vital role played by other diaspora contributors, including Mrs. Abiewense Osaigede, who donated solar panels to bolster the facility’s energy supply and emphasized the need for a more stable power infrastructure, particularly during the wet season when solar efficiency may wane. “The support we have received is commendable but we must do more to ensure sustainability,” she concluded.

National Health Fellows Pay Courtesy Visit to Edo State Diaspora Agency DG, Dr. Loretta Ogboro-Okor

In a landmark move to strengthen grassroots healthcare in Edo State, eight of the eighteen National Health Fellows assigned to various local government areas paid a courtesy visit to Dr. Loretta Ogboro-Okor, Director General of the Edo State Diaspora Agency. The meeting, held at the agency’s headquarters, served as both a formal introduction and a strategic planning session to forge a collaborative path forward.
A Presidential Initiative Rooted in Local Change
The National Health Fellowship Program is a flagship initiative of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, led by the Federal Ministry of Health under Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate. Implemented through the Sector-Wide Approach (SWAp), the program deployed 774 Fellows across Nigeria’s 774 LGAs—with 18 representing Edo State alone.

Out of over 320,000 applicants, these Fellows were selected based on merit, vision, and commitment to community health improvement.
Meet the Fellows in Attendance
• Isaac Victoria Enelemhe – Etsako Central LGA
• Ahmad Fatima Abdullahi – Etsako East LGA
• Favour Ebozele Iziegbe – Esan North East LGA
• James Abhulimen Ogedegbe – Esan West LGA
• Haleemah Ukashah Sulaiman – Etsako West LGA
• Ediagbonya Blessing Osarugue – Egor LGA
• Isibor Lucy Imariabe – Ikpoba-Okha LGA
• Iyekekpolo Ekinadose-Margaret – Oredo LGA
The Meeting: Setting a Vision for Collaboration
Dr. Ogboro-Okor welcomed the Fellows with enthusiasm and reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to supporting grassroots health development in partnership with the diaspora.

“This is not just a program; it’s a movement,” she said. “You are the leaders your communities have been waiting for, and the Diaspora Agency is here to amplify your impact.”
Proposed Model for Action
A collaborative roadmap was laid out, focused on community ownership and diaspora support:
• Fellows will conduct needs assessments in their LGAs.
• Each will submit three revitalization project proposals for primary healthcare centers.
• Local communities will select one project based on urgency and impact.
• The Edo State Diaspora Agency will coordinate outreach to Edo indigenes abroad to crowdfund support, with transparency and public recognition.
Ensuring Fellows Lead the Way
Amid concerns about ownership, the DG firmly assured Fellows that they will remain at the center of all project planning and ex*****on.

“This is your project. Your insight, your voice, your presence in the community is what gives it life,” she emphasized. “The Diaspora is simply here to back you up.”
Immediate Next Steps
• Fellows will submit their refined proposals within one week.
• The Diaspora Agency will compile and present the proposals to the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cyril Oshiomole.
• Pilot implementation will begin in the five LGAs represented.
• A timeline for project ex*****on will be created to ensure results are visible within the one-year fellowship duration.
Sustainability and Growth
Future National Health Fellows will be integrated into ongoing projects to maintain momentum. The model is designed to outlive the fellowship year, creating a lasting legacy of health system strengthening across Edo State.
A Collective Call to Action
The meeting ended on a powerful note of unity and purpose. The Fellows expressed deep gratitude for the support and stressed their readiness to deliver results.

“We know our people’s pain. We live among them. That’s why we’re here—to change the narrative,” one Fellow shared.
Conclusion
This meeting marks the beginning of a transformative partnership between the National Health Fellows, the Edo State Diaspora Agency, and Edo communities—united by a shared goal: to make quality healthcare accessible to all, starting at the grassroots.

Stay tuned as these young changemakers begin to turn vision into action, one community at a time.

Nigeria's Economic Landscape: Navigating the Impact of Trump's Tariffs.
The imposition of a 14% tariff on Nigerian goods exported to the US has sent shockwaves through Nigeria's economic landscape. As the country struggles to recover from the devastating effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, this new challenge threatens to undermine Nigeria's fragile economic growth.

A Weakening Naira
The Naira, Nigeria's currency, has been under pressure in recent months. The decline in oil prices, Nigeria's main export commodity, has reduced the country's foreign exchange earnings, putting a strain on the Naira. The new tariffs will only exacerbate this problem, making it more difficult for Nigeria to maintain a stable exchange rate.

Impact on Exports
Nigeria's exports to the US will likely decline significantly as a result of the tariffs. This will have a ripple effect on the country's economy, impacting various sectors, including agriculture, manufacturing, and mining. The decline in exports will also reduce Nigeria's foreign exchange earnings, further weakening the Naira.

Opportunities for Diversification
While the tariffs pose a significant challenge to Nigeria's economy, they also present an opportunity for the country to diversify its trade partnerships. Nigeria can explore new markets in Asia, Europe, and Latin America, reducing its dependence on the US market. This diversification can help Nigeria reduce its vulnerability to external shocks and promote sustainable economic growth.

Conclusion
The imposition of tariffs on Nigerian goods exported to the US is a significant challenge for Nigeria's economy. However, with careful planning and strategic diversification, Nigeria can navigate this challenge and promote sustainable economic growth. The government must take proactive steps to support exporters, diversify trade partnerships, and maintain a stable exchange rate. By doing so, Nigeria can mitigate the impact of the tariffs and promote a more resilient and diversified economy.

*Important Advisory for Nigerians in Diaspora (USA)*

Dear Compatriots,

As you may be aware, there has been an increase in immigration enforcement activities in the United States, including raids and searches for undocumented migrants. We understand that this can be a stressful and uncertain time for many.

To avoid any potential embarrassment or complications, we strongly advise that you take the following precautions:

1. *Always carry identification documents*: Make sure to carry copies of your green card, passport, or visa with you at all times. This will help you to quickly verify your immigration status and avoid any unnecessary detention or questioning.
2. *Know your rights*: Familiarize yourself with your rights as an immigrant in the United States. You have the right to remain silent, the right to an attorney, and the right to contact your embassy or consulate.
3. *Stay calm and cooperative*: If you are stopped or questioned by immigration authorities, remain calm and cooperative. Provide your identification documents and answer questions politely and truthfully.
4. *Avoid traveling alone*: Whenever possible, try to travel with a friend or family member who is also a documented immigrant. This can provide an added layer of support and protection.
5. *Stay informed*: Stay up-to-date with the latest news and developments on immigration enforcement activities in your area. You can check the official website of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) or follow reputable news sources.

Stay safe, and stay informed.

At the Abuja Federal Registry right now witnessing a friend’s wedding. A staff of the registry erroneously gave the wrong certificate to the couple pointing and saying “ sign here”. Along the signing, it was noticed that they had the wrong certificate and everyone poured the blame on the couple getting married. When the registrar Mrs Adeniyi L Bimbo came in she did the same too. It is unfair that they did not take responsibility for their staff giving the wrong certificate and pushing for signing because they were tired and pressed for time which is understandable if 60 couples are being wed in one day. Mistakes happen but this attempt at shaming a man on his wedding day with the registry failing to take responsibility for their own error is bad. The man agreed to pay for a new certificate for the one that was signed accidentally but the registrar kept accusing him and refused to correct her staff. I’m glad he stood up and defended himself but these people can do better! If you can’t handle 60 couples, reduce the number and don’t spoil the day of those getting married!
