May is Mental Health Awareness Month! At House of Acts, we know mental wellness is essential to recovery.

Behind every recovery story is someone who needed more than treatment. They needed understanding. Connection. A place to heal.

Mental health challenges and substance use disorder (SUD) are often linked, but too many people suffer in silence. That’s why we’re committed to supporting the whole person — mind, body, and spirit.

This month, we ask you to join us:
💚 Watch the video
💚 Talk openly about mental health
💚 Support those in recovery

Together, we can break the stigma and build a pathway to healing.

We’re so very proud of you, Danny Cotton!

“If he can do it, I can do it too.”

The Vallejo Times-Herald is shining a light on a few of Solano County’s Hometown Heroes — and we’re proud to see a House of Acts alumni included in this powerful story of redemption and recovery.

At House of Acts, we believe in second chances, and this article affirms what we see every day: transformation is possible when people are given the support, tools, and compassion they need to heal.

We’re honored to be part of a community that uplifts those working hard to reclaim their lives and inspire others to do the same.

Second chances are real. Redemption is possible. And now, justice has a new champion — White House Pardon Czar Alice Marie Johnson

History was made on February 20, 2025, as Alice Marie Johnson was appointed the first-ever White House Pardon Czar — a monumental step toward justice reform and second chances.

Once sentenced to life without parole for a nonviolent drug offense, Alice Marie Johnson turned her fight for freedom into a mission to uplift others. Her appointment signals a new era — one where clemency, rehabilitation, and reentry support are recognized as essential to true justice.

"I am living proof that second chances can lead to new beginnings." — Alice Marie Johnson

At House of Acts, we know that substance use recovery and criminal justice reform are deeply connected. Addressing addiction with treatment — not just punishment — is how we build stronger, healthier communities.

📢 Let’s continue advocating for policies that give people the support they need to reclaim their lives. Starting by supporting Pardon Czar Johnson in her new role. Congratulations!

This Black History Month, we honor Hattie Miles, the visionary founder of House of Acts — the first Black female-founded, nonprofit, faith-based substance abuse recovery center in California.

For over 60 years, Hattie dedicated her life to healing Vallejo’s most vulnerable communities. She created more than a recovery program — she built a sanctuary for those seeking transformation. Alongside her husband, she also operated Miles Care Home, supporting individuals with mental health challenges, and spent 26 years fighting for legal justice at Solano County Legal Assistance Services.

Hattie’s impact was profound. She served in civic and social organizations, from the NAACP to The Links, Inc., and received the NAACP Lifetime Achievement Award, Touro University’s Humanitarian Award, and recognition from the California Legislature.

But her true legacy is the thousands of lives she uplifted, the families she helped rebuild, and the community she strengthened.

We are reminded that true leadership isn’t about titles — it’s about service, resilience, and love.

💡 This Black History Month and beyond, we celebrate Hattie Miles and all the unsung heroes working to heal and uplift their communities.

Today, we honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a beacon of hope, love, and transformative change.

At House of Acts, we are reminded that...
"Only through an inner spiritual transformation do we gain the strength to fight vigorously the evils of the world in a humble and loving spirit."
– from his book, "Strength to Love"

We are witnesses to this transformation daily in those overcoming substance use challenges.

Let’s celebrate his vision by continuing to work toward equity, unity, and love in our communities.
