We’re “Painting Away ALZ” one bold brushstroke at a time 🎨☂️

This summer, we’re back at it with our beloved Artbrellas—and this year, our Memory Care residents are taking the creative lead 💜

Last year, our Dougherty Ferry community painted 32 umbrellas and raised nearly $3,000 for the Alzheimer’s Association. So how do you top that? You let the heart of the community lead the way—with love, memory, and color guiding each design.

Meet Dottie & Judy, two of our resident Impressionists. Judy says their umbrella reminds her of “the brightest colors of her life” and her “favorite season—Summer.” John stepped up as the official umbrella holder (the real MVP if you ask us).

This project is packed with joy, stories, and purpose. And our artists? They’re just getting started.

🎨 Introducing: Paint Away Alzheimer’s – Our National Campaign to with Purpose 💜☂️

At Spectrum Retirement Communities, we believe that creativity can spark connection, storytelling, and even change. 🎨 Sun’s out, dye’s out!

At Dougherty Ferry, our Memory Care residents kicked off summer with a splash of color and creativity. With Irene and Penn leading the way, the group dove into vibrant tie-dye—twisting, tying, and laughing through every step.

Thanks to some handy pattern inspiration from Google and a whole lot of teamwork, they even made extra shirts for friends. Because joy, like a good shirt, is better when shared. 💜☀️

🌸✨ SNEAK PEEK ALERT! Who knew repurposed wallpaper could look THIS good?!

Our Dougherty Ferry “Do It Your Selfers” have been hard at work transforming wallpaper into mini lampshades and our personal favorite—gorgeous handmade wreaths! 💐🧡

Each flower was carefully cut and placed with love to create one-of-a-kind door décor that’s as meaningful as it is beautiful. And this is just the beginning...

🚪Starting next week, we're kicking off a season-long workshop series where residents will create themed door decorations twice a week—leading up to our Alzheimer’s Fundraiser in November.

Residents went off to the races for an unforgettable day at Fairmount Park Casino & Racing! 🐎🏁

After years of requests, we finally set out on our longest trip yet, and it was worth every mile. The energy of the crowd, the thrill of placing bets, and the excitement of the races made for an incredible experience. Trying to make sense of all the racing stats and terminology was the hardest part, who knew furlongs could be so tricky?

The highlight of the day? Tom’s $2 bet on Ellie Deli came out a winner! 🏆 For some, it was their first time back since childhood, making the day even more special.

✈️ Around the World in 60 Minutes continues at Dougherty Ferry—and this week we landed in Korea! 🇰🇷

Inspired by Korean culture and cuisine, our residents rolled up their sleeves to make kimchi from scratch—no shortcuts here! We learned traditional prep methods, practiced our chopstick skills (with lots of laughter), and created a flavorful hands-on experience that brought Korea right to our kitchen.

Inspired by our favorite vintage TV shows and the timeless thrill of collecting, we created the Dougherty Ferry Road Show! Residents brought their cherished keepsakes—from handmade quilts to 1934 Shirley Temple dolls—and shared the rich stories behind them.

Thanks to guest antique expert Joan Komlos, we learned what’s hot, what’s not, and why each item matters. This program has sparked meaningful connection, curiosity, and true collector energy in our community.

Over the past month, our Dougherty Ferry Memory Care residents rolled up their sleeves to support our furry neighbors at the Humane Society of Missouri 💕

During a recent volunteer trip, our “Friends of the Community” outreach group helped organize donations, fold linens, and craft litter boxes. But one request tugged at our hearts—no-sew fleece blankets for the cats in need.

So we got to work. Residents selected their favorite fabrics and tied each blanket with love and purpose—just like we did three years ago when we donated over 20 handmade blankets and snuffle mats. 🧶🐱

Not only did this project sharpen our minds and keep our hands busy—it warmed our spirits to know we’re helping comfort shelter pets as they wait for their forever homes. We can’t wait for our next delivery day! ❤️

With delicate spray and brush techniques, she transformed an upcycled frame into a striking study of modern minimalism.

We can’t get enough of this heartfelt Valentine’s celebration! 🎶❤️ One of our communities took the season of love to the next level with Singing Love-O-Grams! 🎤✨ Dressed to impress in a bold red tux, their Director of Entertainment & Programming, Jim, delivered serenades, roses, and sweet treats to residents and team members. 🌹🍫

Even better? Each Love-O-Gram supported the Walk to End Alzheimer’s, spreading love while making a difference. 💜 Now that’s how you redefine Valentine’s Day!
