Physical therapy might not be your first thought when it comes to nagging back pain, pesky headaches or even helping to control diabetes. But maybe it should be.

Physical therapy (or PT as it’s commonly called) isn’t just for severe pain or after an accident or injury. PT encourages movement across all healthcare practices, from a fall to joint replacement to chronic shoulder pain. PT can be used to improve your ability to enjoy the activities that you love to do.

Here physical therapists Mary Stilphen, PT, DPT, and Christine Schulte, PT, MBA, share five things that PT can help you manage:

1. Improve mobility, balance and strength. Physical therapists are movement advocates. Part of their job is to teach you about cause and effect in the human body. Knee pain could be the result of needing to strengthen your hips, while carpal tunnel and neck pain could be the result of typing and texting too much.

2. Avoid surgery. While surgery is sometimes unavoidable, pre-surgical PT (sometimes referred to as “pre-hab”) can help ease recovery time and may provide a better outcome post-surgery. Some patients have seen such an increase in motion and a reduction in pain after going to PT that they’ve opted out of surgery altogether.

3. Prevent injury. There’s a good chance you’ve never seen a physical therapist unless you were injured, but it’s a good idea to treat PT as a form of preventative care. Maybe you want to have a competitive sports advantage or work on your posture. A good PT will learn about your activity level and teach you about what can be done to prevent injury — including how to be more aware when it comes to movement.

4. Manage aging. As we age we are at risk to lose muscle mass and strength, making it harder to balance our own body weight. PT can help address joint pain, arthritic pain and osteoarthritis issues. It’s also important for aging adults to learn to make modifications and adjustments for everyday activities.

5. Help control a disease or condition. Physical therapy extends well beyond rehabilitation centers. People with type 2 diabetes, for example, can benefit from physical therapy as physical conditioning assists with weight loss through movement potentially reducing need for medications and reducing risk for heart disease and stroke. Another area of focus in PT is helping to manage neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis.

Kinesio Taping is a technique designed to work with the body’s natural healing process while providing rehabilitative support and stability to muscles and joints. It can be used to decrease pain, reduce inflammation, and relax overused or tired muscles.

What is Kinesio tape?
Kinesio tape is a flexible tape that supports and stabilizes joints, muscles, and ligaments as they bend, contract, and extend. You may have seen athletes at sporting events wearing long strips of brightly colored tape strategically placed on or near their joints.

Kinesio tape, also known as kinesiology or elastic therapeutic tape, boasts up to 40 percent elasticity. The tape is typically made of cotton and spandex with a heat-activated acrylic adhesive to keep it in place on the skin.

Physical therapists use various methods of Kinesio taping to apply tension to the skin and muscle. Taping can be used as a rehabilitative tool to:

Relieve pain
Reduce inflammation
Relax overused muscles and joints
Improve athletic performance
Stabilize joints
Support the body’s natural healing process

Kinesio tape takes the stress off the joints by creating a rubber-band effect that modifies movement while supporting muscles and tendons.

The adhesive is strong enough to withstand approved activities, showers, and daily life movements

Sports medicine providers and physical therapists use the taping technique on a case-by-case basis as a treatment option for sports-related injuries. Often it takes a combination of treatments and techniques in the hands of a skillful provider to relieve pain.

The Graston Technique is a form of manual therapy used in physical therapy and rehabilitation. Here's some information about it:

What is Graston Technique?
The Graston Technique is a patented form of instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM). It involves the use of specially designed stainless steel instruments to effectively detect and treat areas of soft tissue dysfunction, such as scar tissue, fascial restrictions, and muscle adhesions.

How does it work?
During a Graston Technique session, the therapist applies the stainless steel instruments to the skin over the affected area. These instruments help the therapist identify areas of abnormal tissue texture or tension. The therapist then uses the instruments to apply controlled pressure and friction, breaking down scar tissue and fascial adhesions while promoting tissue healing and remodeling.

Benefits: The Graston Technique is believed to offer several potential benefits, including:

Breaking down scar tissue and adhesions
Improving range of motion and flexibility
Reducing pain and inflammation
Enhancing tissue healing and repair
Restoring functional movement patterns

Conditions treated: The Graston Technique is commonly used to address a variety of musculoskeletal conditions, including:

Tendinopathies (e.g., Achilles tendinopathy, tennis elbow)
Ligament sprains and strains
Muscle strains
Plantar fasciitis
IT band syndrome
Post-surgical scar tissue
Chronic overuse injuries

Safety and effectiveness: When performed by a trained and certified therapist, the Graston Technique is generally considered safe and effective. However, as with any manual therapy technique, there are certain contraindications and precautions to consider. It's essential to consult with a qualified healthcare provider to determine if the Graston Technique is appropriate for your specific condition and individual circumstances.

Overall, the Graston Technique can be a valuable tool in the hands of skilled physical therapists as part of a comprehensive treatment plan for musculoskeletal injuries and dysfunctions.

02/15/2024

While the popularity of cupping has significantly increased in the past recent years, it isn’t a new practice. In fact, it was originally used by the ancient Chinese, Egyptian, and Middle Eastern cultures. It is an ancient form of alternative medicine that is performed by placing cups on the skin, in order to create suction.

Today, it is used as a way to relieve pain, promote relaxation, enhance blood flow, and ease inflammation. To find out more about how cupping may benefit you, request an appointment at Prime Care Physical Therapy today.

I’m not so sure about cupping – does it really work?

While there are some apprehensions toward cupping, there is real science behind it. The suction within the cups creates negative pressure, which helps to increase hydration and blood flow to body tissues, ease up adhesions, and decrease muscle spasms. It is a versatile treatment that can be modified for your condition, whether you need deep tissue massage or lymphatic drainage.

Why should I choose cupping therapy?
Cupping can sometimes be described as a “tissue distraction release” technique. During the cupping process, the cups are can be left in place for several minutes or glided across different areas of the body in order to lift and separate tissue. This works to enhance the release of the interfaces between the neural tissues, fascia, skin, ligaments, muscles, and tendons. It relaxes muscles, releases trigger points, improves lymphatic flow, increases local circulation, and releases scar tissue adhesion. Evidence supports cupping as an effective treatment method for several conditions, such as chronic neck pain, low back pain, and fibromyalgia.

It is no secret that cupping is a common and popular practice among athletes. In fact, several athletes from the 2016 Rio Olympics used cupping. A running patient with over a year history of iliotibial band (ITB) pain reported instant relief following a three-minute session of cupping. The technique was repeated a week later. Following only two cupping sessions, he was symptom-free and returned to his usual running routine.

What can I expect from a cupping session?

At Prime Care Physical Therapy, we use modern cupping techniques. We use plastic, silicone or rubber cups that are applied to the skin of the painful area, and a small hand pump is used to create negative pressure. Cups might be left in place for several minute or might be moved around.

We do not to use any flammable substances to heat the cup up to develop negative pressure and we never do “wet” cupping where the blood is drawn.

If you are in Valley Stream, NY, and have an injury or health condition that is limiting you from living your life the way you want, start with requesting an appointment with Prime Care Physical Therapy. You will meet with one of our licensed physical therapists to figure out if cupping is right for you!

At Prime Care Physical Therapy, we use cupping as an addition, an added treatment to typical physical therapy treatments.
