A lot of people are going to be eating candy this week.
If you're one of them, stick to dark chocolate. In moderation, it can be good for you.
According to John Hopkins Medicine, "Dark chocolate contains powerful antioxidants. Among the most beneficial is a flavonol called epicatechin. Flavonols are compounds found in plants that fight inflammation and protect against cell damage caused by free radicals."
So in plain English, how does that translate into possible health benefits?
~ It could help lower blood pressure, reduce the risk of clotting, and increase blood circulation
~ Could help balance the immune system
~ In some cases, helps the body use its insulin better which might prevent diabetes
~ Can have a positive impact on brain function including reaction time
~ Can help an athlete to maintain workout intensity longer
~ Reduces stress
Most of these benefits are associated with dark chocolate containing at least a 70% cacao content. The less cacao content, the less benefit that one receives from chocolate.
In many cases it's OK to indulge with just a little chocolate - as long as its dark chocolate.
Enjoy!
