🔬 Zoom in on histology. Can you guess what is under the microscope?
Hint:
This slide shows a nail stained with Periodic Acid Shiff with Light Green (PAS) which is a classic histochemical stain used to highlight fungi.
Would you have guessed fungus?
In these images, the fungi (magenta-pink) are tunneling their way through nail keratin (green-blue)
How does it work?
Oxidized fungal cell wall carbohydrates bind with Schiff reagent producing the characteristic magenta-pink color. This highlights the shape and precise location of fungal elements.
Excellently prepared slides like this help our pathologists to confirm with confidence both the presence and extent of microorganisms in tissues.
Note: Image shown on the slide is magnified for visualization.
