Don’t tell me you’re going to sit around and WAIT to get dementia

You don’t have to be one of the 12.7 million people with Alzheimer’s in 2050!

Let’s DO something about it, starting today ⬇️

🛀 Relaxation helps manage chronic stress which can be a risk factor for dementia. You may consider journaling, praying, yoga, meditation, sitting down and closing your eyes for a few minutes.
🏃‍♀️ Physical activity greatly reduces the risk of dementia. Try going for a short walk or taking the stairs instead of the elevator.
🥬 As Dr. Annie Fenn says, the number one dementia-reducing behavior is a brain-healthy dietary pattern. Grab some leafy greens and berries today!
💤 Sleeping 7-8 hours/night is when your brain cleans itself out. Try to prioritize 7-8 hours of sleep each night.

I finally cracked the code ⬇️

Working out is hard to make time for... I get it. I have three 3 year-olds and I work. BUT that doesn’t excuse me from exercising because I know it’s AS GOOD for my brain as it is my body.

If you said to me, “but I literally have no time!” I’d tell you to shift your thinking.

❌ You don’t need to spend hours in the gym
❌ You don’t *have* to wake up early (but you can)
❌ You don’t have to have a ton of gym equipment or even a gym membership

✅ You just need to incorporate working out into your day!

The only “theory” I *actually* use with traumatic brain injury patients!

Resilience is HUGE for patients post TBI.

Here are some additional ways to help facilitate resilience if you know/love someone with a traumatic brain injury ⬇️

🧠 Struggling during rehabilitation is normal
🧠 Embrace an optimistic and future-oriented outlook & encourage conversations focused on strengths rather than deficits
🧠 Track/ graph stressors & coping over time & identify incremental progress

1️⃣ I am AMAZED at the athleticism of the Olympics athletes. These people are the best of the best, no criticism coming from me.

2️⃣ No, no, no. You got it wrong, Doc. Only relative rest should be recommended (AKA do what you can, limit activities of daily living that increase symptoms)

3️⃣ 🚩 If you’ve had a concussion, you are more prone for another due to decreased reaction time among other reasons. *Please* don’t continue to play after a concussion or Snoop Dogg WILL look at you like this.

4️⃣ 🤣🙄😳 Hard to believe a coach would ACTUALLY say this. Any athlete suspected of a concussion needs to be IMMEDIATELY removed from the field of play and assessed.

How a concussion *really* affects you

➡️ Difficulty focusing on watching film
➡️ Difficulty remembering a new play
➡️ Trouble talking with a teammate while warming up
➡️ Trouble remembering which play the quarterback called

It’s frustrating to have to 🛑 STOP playing, but if you continue to play through your symptoms, you will delay your overall recovery AND put yourself more at risk of another concussion.

Brain healthy swaps 📱🏃‍♀️🤯

📱➡️📕 Instead of doomscrolling before bed —> read a book, pray or meditate

❌😴😴 Instead of pulling all-nighters or sacrificing sleep —> prioritize a good 7-8 hours of sleep

📺 Instead of “watching a show to wind down” —> Allow yourself to be bored for a few minutes.
➡️ Did you know your brain still has to process emotions and use memory when watching a T.V. show? It isn’t the brain break you think it is!

📺➡️💐🎹 Instead of binge-watching T.V. —> Find a hobby that is challenging and enjoyable (gardening, learning an instrument, or maybe a new language!). This is great for cognitive stimulation 🧠

🍇🍓 Instead of eating sugary snacks —> Eat nuts, berries or other fruit

🚶‍♀️👊 Instead of sitting on the couch —> Workout for 5 minutes or go for a walk
