Did you know…The Community Mental Health Act, signed in 1963, supported treatment closer to home. Locally, volunteers organized efforts and developed partnerships that would lay the foundation for Porter-Starke Services.

Did you know: In the 1950s, a new wave of advocacy began reshaping mental health care in the United States. Reformers questioned institutional practices and called for more compassionate, community-based approaches. This decade laid important groundwork for the modern mental health system we know today and provided the foundation for the creation of Porter-Starke Services.

We recently partnered with the Porter County Sheriff's Office to provide Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training for local law enforcement, first responders, dispatchers, and social workers. This week-long training equips frontline professionals with the knowledge and skills to safely and effectively respond to individuals experiencing a mental health crisis. This can help to reduce risk, divert people from the justice system, and connect people with services and support they truly need. Thank you to the following agencies and organizations for joining us in this training:

Gary Police Department, Indiana Department of Correction, Lake Station Fire & Rescue / EMS, Michigan City Police Department, Northwest Health, Portage Police Department (Indiana), Porter County Central Communications (911), Porter County Juvenile Detention, South Haven Fire Department, Valparaiso Police Department, and Valparaiso University Police Department.
