My dad, Ga***rd Hold, served as a dental assistant in the SeaBees. However, when the Marines were fighting, there were few teeth to work on. Several times he spent time on the "secured" beaches picking up dead Marines. The only time he ever spoke about this was when he was trying to talk me out of joining the Marine Corps. Like others of his generation, they did what needed to be done. When my dad gave me that talk, we drove to a spot overlooking the valley. In my wisdom I said, "But, Dad, it's different now."
