We knew we were getting tall when we passed up Grandma West. Born on the East Coast of Italy in the small town of Ortona. Her Father Vincenzzo Iubatti and his wife Tereasa decided to make a better life for themselves in America. Arriving in the land of opportunity the 15th of June 1907 the little family went through Immigration at Ellis Island. As they passed through Ellis Island Maria Iubatti became Mary Iubatti.

It was not that unusual to Americanize a Name when entering the country. However, if I had not seen the ships manifest and then the Ellis Island record I would have never known that my Grandmother had had a different name. Proud papa & husband moment...my wife is hosting a pop up photo opportunity this weekend at Spare Room Studios in Chesterton. Its $10.00 per person. Take your own photos or bring your own photographer (yes, they have to pay the admission fee too). There are 6 different backgrounds, you have 10 minutes at each one to capture the smiles. Check the comments for a bonus scene just because they were having fun decorating! And did you see that beautiful granddaughter of mine in one of those photos?
