Between welcoming a new baby and moving states, I have been a bit quiet on here lately. We have officially relocated to Northwest Indiana and I am ready to start taking clients again.
Kentucky and Tennessee were so good to me. This is where my business began and my first clients that entrusted me with working on their horses. I am so thankful to each and every one of you, but especially the ones who stuck with me as I continued to expand my education.
Northwest Indiana is home for me and I am so excited to be back. This is where my love and passion for horses began and I am ready to work with and give back to my local community. Little me that always begged for riding lessons and to be around horses would be so thrilled for current me. Fun fact- the buckskin in the lower right photo was actually my first lease horse and carried me through all of my angsty teenage years...truly a saint for putting up with me.

Last month, I got to spend some time at Caliente Therapy LLC learning from Jordan and Summer with Superior Therapy
During this, we focused on evidence based rehab and bodywork techniques designed to support the entire wellbeing of the horse. We studied and learned new protocols for why and when to use equipment such as laser, PEMF, vibration plates, corrective exercises, and the AquaTred.
I’m excited to take this information and my certification in muscular rehab back to my clients to better help support them and their horses!

❓Did you know that it takes a horse’s synovial fluid 10 to 15 minutes to warm up?

🛢️Synovial fluid is a thick liquid that is produced by the synovial membrane in the joints and keeps your horse running like a well oiled machine!
It lubricates and provides shock absorption for the joints during movement.

🗑️The synovial membrane is very thin and feeds and protects the joint. The blood vessels in the membrane are responsible for bringing nutrition to the joint and removing waste from the joint.

🍯Before exercise, the synovial fluid is cool and thick, similar to the consistency of honey. When circulation increases, the fluid starts to thin and allows the joints do glide smoothly.

🐎What does this mean for us as riders?
Before exercise, our horses should do 10-15 minutes of only walking either on the ground or under saddle.
This is a perfect time to work on corrective exercises
After exercise, we need to ensure a proper cool down period to allow the synovial fluid to return to its resting state.

🎙️Let’s talk fascia

What is it?
Fascia is a thin, spider web looking connective tissue that lays between the skin and the muscle and is considered one of the biggest sensory organs in the body and helps horses react to stimuli. Fascia holds the body together by giving muscles and organs their shape, as well as providing shock absorption for the body. Think of it like cling wrap that holds everything together!

Healthy fascia is relaxed and wavy and allows the muscles to glide reducing friction and increasing range of motion.

🚫When fascia becomes tight or restricted due to trauma, inflammation, imbalance, or poor posture it can restrict movement or cause chronic discomfort. Over time, this leads to compensation patterns from your horse moving to avoid the discomfort creating secondary problems. Tight fascia can also lead to chronic stimulation of nerve endings that can cause your horse to feel an itching or tingling sensation.

👚Imagine wearing a shirt that’s two sizes too small and trying to raise your arms and move them around- that’s what tight fascia feels like!

💧Maintaining healthy fascia is vital for both comfort and performance. We can help ensure our horses fascia health by keeping them on a good feeding and hydration plan so they have all the nutrients that they need to thrive. Maintaining regular movement, stretching, bodywork, and correct hoof angles are all ways we can help our equine friends feel their best!

🧠As body workers, we follow the fascia lines to help reduce restriction and find underlying problems by looking for areas of tension, restriction, and asymmetry. We can break down these adhesions, increase circulation, and help encourage the removal of metabolic waste and inflammation while supporting relaxation of the nervous system.

💁‍♀️ Let's Talk.... Secondary Issues vs. Primary Problem
▪️Pt.1

If we think of the body like it's the tree in this picture, I think it gives good imagery to understand the difference in secondary issues and "getting to the root" aka the primary problem. It's easy to realize that something is wrong with a tree if the leaves are discolored or fall off in early summer or if it makes minimal fruit... The problem is that when there is an issue in the root system it may take weeks to years before it is reflected in the part of the tree you can see. So by the time you notice the leaves are discolored, the system has been out of balance for a long time.

In my experience as a therapist, I find that secondary issues and compensatory pain tend to be the factors that bring people into the office to get worked on. When the body has run out of ways to compensate without you realizing, then you come in looking for a solution. The body has to get louder for you to listen.
👉 Same thing with horses. I find that those secondary issues and compensatory pain patterns cause a really LOUD response that will demand attention. Examples: Bucking, Rearing, Refusal, Performance Anxiety, Aggression... The body has to get loud enough that you will listen.

As a rehab therapist, it's part of my job to "pull back the lens" until I can look at the whole horse and start connecting the dots of compensation until it forms a pattern I recognize. Once I have a pattern, then we can start to create solutions.

Solutions might look like:
- Working with your vet, farrier, dentist
- Environmental or social changes
- Diet or exercise changes
- Tack or training aid changes ... Just to name a few things....

At the expense of making this post kind of a long read, I thought it would make a great multi-part series where I break down some common things that I see with some of the issues listed below.
