When I meet with a new client,
we review what they are currently eating & drinking.

No surprise that drinking can sometimes be hard
after weight loss surgery....and overwhelming.

For those that can't seem to get in enough fluid,
we often start with super-tiny goals like just taking ONE sip when they think about drinking their water.

We can overwhelm ourselves trying go from drinking a few ounces to a gallon of water daily.

That's too much.
Start small & keep building.
You'll have greater success.

I remember one woman I started working with a couple years ago, she couldn't walk very far.
She really wanted to exercise, but couldn't take more than a few steps.

We came up with a plan.
For a week, she just walked out her front door.
She could do whatever she wanted after that.
She could go back in, sit on her porch or walk a little further.

The idea was just to get her to move...a little bit.

Guess what happened?

After a month, she was walking a short distance from her house most days. And it all started with simply walking out the door.

Just this week, I met with a new client.
She let me know right away that she didn't cook, didn't like to cook & was frustrated with her weight loss efforts.

You see, she was eating out most of her meals.
Or eating the kid food she made at home..you know pizza, chicken nuggets, mac-n-cheese.

BUT, I know, since I don't really like to cook either that there are LOTS of healthy options that don't require much effort.

If you are in the same boat,
next time you head into the grocery store,
look at what pre-made options are available.
Think pre-cooked chicken, steak & shrimp, cheese sticks, cottage cheese, yogurt, tuna, salads, pre-cut veggies, fruit cups & pre-portioned brown rice & quinoa.

Cooking something healthy at home?
Make a little extra to eat the next day or freeze.

I love to make chilis, stews and soups.
I'll always make a little extra to give me another day of meals. Or I might repurpose it, like chili.
One day it's chili in a bowl. The next day, its over a bowl of lettuce & veggies.

Having a hard time getting in all your fluids?

Try setting a goal of drinking one bottle before you start your day.

One of my clients was only getting in 1/2 of her fluids daily until she starting drinking ONE bottle before she left the house. She found that helped her to drink even more fluids & motivated her to work on it.

Have you tried to start exercising only to fail?

Me too.
I'll often want to add exercise super-early so I can get on with the rest of my day,
but I'm not an early bird.

After years of trial & error...& adjusting,
I've found that it's best for me to exercise around noon. I tend to work later in the day so that works best for me.

How about you?
What is the best time to exercise?
Can you get in a few minutes in the morning?
Midday like me? Or is it best towards the end of the day?

Don't think about what you SHOULD do,
but what is realistic.

I don't know about you, but sometimes,
I've got the wrong mindset about eating healthy.

I've got to keep my mind in check.
You see, for many years, I was a binge eater.
As a binge eater, you learn to categorize foods as "good" and "bad". It really messed with my thinking & I've spent years undoing that thinking.

I have to remind myself that I am learning a new skill (eating healthy) & it takes time to learn how to read labels, make new recipes & shop differently.

I hear from so many people that eating healthy feels like a chore. Yes, in the beginning, you are changing a lot of habits, but in time, it gets easier.

One of the easiest things you can do is to throw a healthy snack in your bag or purse when you are on-the-run. A protein shake, a protein bar, cheese stick, yogurt, berries or raw nuts.

A little preplanning can save a disaster later.

After weight loss surgery, drinking enough fluid can feel like such a hassle. But, how much fluid you drink can make a difference with your weight loss efforts.

Maybe you don't like water, can't drink it or don't feel thirsty. Try other fluids. Set an alarm.

You've gone through so much to have weight loss surgery, but the surgery is ONE tool in your toolbox.

Your success depends on making healthy changes, including getting in your fluids.

How can you change your thinking around fluids to be a "Get To", not a "Have To"? Do you need to change what you're drinking? Do you need to set up a better system? Do you need to set reminders?

What is ONE small thing you could do that would move you closer to your fitness goals?

I've got a yoga app on my phone.
It's only 5 minutes of yoga.
It's not a big deal, yet it is a big deal.
Cuz I can't get off the couch somedays.

But, I've found that if I just sit on the floor.
I'm more apt to open my yoga app & give it my 5 minutes. Yes, I know it sounds silly, but it works.

Give it a try.
Maybe your thing isn't yoga, but walking, or strength training.

Try it. Just do ONE thing.
Walk out the door & take ONE step.
Pull out your dumbbells & do ONE curl.
Then stop.

For a few days, just do ONE thing.

After a few days, you'll be ready to do more.

I often buy pre-made or pre-cut foods to make life easier. Rotisseurie chicken, tuna packets, salads, frozen veggies, quinoa cups.

Next time you head out to the grocery store,
take a few extra minutes to look around.
I think you will be surprised by all of the options available to you!
