Today, Roe v. Wade was overturned by the Supreme Court. This decision has far-reaching consequences for all American families. It exacerbates health inequities and adds to the risks of pregnancy including increased rates of maternal mortality. We are speaking out in support of the many families and providers who need and deserve access to healthcare and mental health resources related to pregnancy.

Pregnancy and associated physical and mental health risks are healthcare issues with potentially serious negative outcomes. Access to safe, legal, and informed options related to pregnancy is fundamental to providing equitable healthcare, and restricting access disproportionately impacts communities of color and those with limited resources.

At Postpartum Support International, we will continue to stand up for equitable healthcare – including mental health care – for all pregnant, postpartum and post-loss individuals and their families. We support all choices made by individuals and their trusted health care providers to maintain their physical and mental health.

We are here for you no matter what.

Did you know, maternal mental health disorders, like postpartum depression, are more common than breast cancer or gestational diabetes.

The most common maternal mental health disorders are anxiety followed by depression. These disorders can be mild or so severe they become debilitating.

A study conducted during the pandemic shows that rates of clinically significant anxiety and depression symptoms have more than doubled - rising to 72% and 41% respectively - among pregnant and postpartum women.

All women are at risk though disparities are stark. Women of color and low-income mothers are faced with overwhelming stressors and not surprisingly are several times more likely to suffer from maternal anxiety or depression., AND are less likely to receive treatment than other mothers.

Maternal Mental Health Disorders onset during pregnancy, prior to pregnancy or in the postpartum period. When a mother isn’t properly supported and treated symptoms can persist for years impacting her own health and well-being and potentially her baby’s.

"These statistics are not new but important to share - and they remain unacceptable as ever:

CDC data confirms that Black women are three to four times more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications, and twice as likely to lose an infant to premature death.

According to the NIH, Black mothers are several times more likely to suffer from Postpartum Depression but less likely to receive treatment and follow-up.

This year, we are painfully aware that African Americans are at significantly greater risk of contracting the potentially deadly Covid-19 virus and less likely to receive proper treatment, due to the same root causes of the effects of long-standing racism in social and healthcare systems." *Source- Postpartum Support International

For the partners of parents struggling with depression, anxiety or trauma during pregnancy or postpartum.... Keep what’s under the surface in mind and respond to that instead.

Sometimes, when we are struggling with our mental health, it can take the form on the outside of hostility and irritability. Don’t forget to pay attention to the signs and be kind to those who may seem angry – they may be fighting a hard battle. Via @ journey_to_wellness

I had the privilege to participate in a training for this powerful model for support groups. It reminded me and reinforced my belief in the strength of just being able to hold space for each other and be truly heard. Excited about starting a perinatal support group soon in the East Tampa Bay Area! Thanks to the Seventh Mom Project for hosting this!

In celebration of National Prematurity Awareness month, PSI is announcing a new Online Support Group just for NICU parents.

Parents whose baby (or babies) are spending time in the NICU are at higher risk for developing mental health issues like postpartum depression and/or anxiety due to the uniquely stressful experience of the NICU. We are here to help.

Join our trained peer facilitators (who are NICU alums) for a free weekly chat. It's virtual and free to join. Just create a Support Group Central account and select "NICU Parents" to register. It's okay (even healthy) to focus on yourself. Our first meeting is this THURSDAY so please join us: https://www.postpartum.net/get-help/psi-online-support-meetings/
