Maintaining a healthy body weight is one of the most effective ways to protect your knees and improve overall joint health. Research has shown that even modest weight loss can have a profound impact on knee function and comfort. Specifically, studies indicate that for every pound of body weight lost, approximately four pounds of pressure is removed from the knees during daily activities such as walking, standing, or climbing stairs. This means that losing 10 pounds can reduce knee joint stress by roughly 40 pounds, significantly easing strain on cartilage, ligaments, and surrounding tissues. Such reduction in mechanical load can lead to decreased pain, improved mobility, and a lower risk of developing or worsening conditions like osteoarthritis.
The knees are weight-bearing joints, which means they carry a large portion of the body’s mass with every step. Excess weight increases the mechanical forces transmitted through these joints, accelerating cartilage wear and contributing to inflammation in the joint space. This inflammation can worsen discomfort and make everyday movements challenging. By losing weight, individuals not only reduce the direct physical stress on the knees but also decrease the inflammatory signals associated with adipose tissue, which can further benefit joint health.
Beyond joint protection, weight loss can improve overall physical performance and reduce the risk of secondary health issues. With less pressure on the knees, individuals often experience greater ease during exercise, allowing for a more active lifestyle that can reinforce weight management, cardiovascular health, and muscular strength. The combination of reduced joint load and increased activity creates a positive feedback loop, promoting long-term musculoskeletal health and overall well-being.
Clinicians and health organizations consistently emphasize weight management as a key strategy for preventing and managing knee pain. Even a modest reduction in body weight 10 to 15 pounds can have measurable benefits, improving quality of life, enhancing mobility, and potentially delaying the progression of degenerative joint diseases. This evidence highlights the interconnectedness of weight, joint health, and functional independence, making weight management a cornerstone of preventive and rehabilitative care for knee-related issues.
In summary, losing excess body weight is not only beneficial for general health but is particularly crucial for protecting the knees. Each pound lost translates into multiple pounds of pressure relief, reducing pain, supporting cartilage health, and enabling a more active, comfortable lifestyle.

Substance abuse isn’t just about drugs or alcohol—it can come in many forms. The food we consume, the drinks we rely on, and the sedentary lifestyles we lead can all become addictive in their own way. Sugar, processed foods, and soda can be just as harmful to our bodies as any pharmaceutical or recreational drug. It's time to rethink what we’re feeding our bodies and start focusing on nourishment that truly supports our health. 🍕🥤

Why Van Alstyne?
There is a booming population growth underway and predicted to increase up to 3.5% over future (actual population growth has shown greater than 10.2% increase between 2016 & 2017). The families moving to these communities will consist of all age groups, multiple cultures, and with various health related ailments or conditions.
In Van Alstyne, 2017 had a population of 3,964, a 10.2% growth rate increase from 2016 and 7.23% average growth rate since 2013. Projected growth of 1.8-3.5% is based on all towns and cities along highway 75 north of McKinney and south of the Oklahoma border. Actual growth trends for the community of Van Alstyne have much higher results (7.2-10.2+% yearly).
Expansion of highway 75 to a minimum of six lanes from Dallas north to the Oklahoma border is already underway. Six lanes exist from McKinney north to Anna currently and new construction from Anna north to Van Alstyne is beginning to break ground as of the start of 2019. Sherman is growing southward with highway expansion underway.
The once “small communities” of highway 75 are now growing faster than resources can provide. Many healthcare clinics are at their capacity and are no longer receiving new patients. This redirects patients to seek healthcare services in other towns and cities, where the number of primary care providers are more abundant. Most “patients” with in the smaller communities such as Van Alstyne, utilize medical and primary care services in the larger cities north and south of them. With Sherman being 17 miles north of Van Alstyne and McKinney being 17 miles south of Van Alstyne, the necessity for starting and sustaining a primary care practice is at a premium.
