SIAAP is a registered 501C 3 Nonprofit organization in the United States under the IRS.
SIAAP was started in 2005 by Frank Musisi and his mother, late Mauricia Najjuma together with a few community elders in Kalangala as a nongovernment organization (NGO) to cater mainly for HIV/ AIDS patients in Ssese Islands. However, it now provides other medical services. It has a governing board composed of an Advisory Committee and a management team headed by a project coordinator who manages the day to day operations of the project. It has a holistic approach addressing needs of people living with HIV/AIDS ( PLWH ) within their communities. On the ground is a network of village health teams (VHTS) who play a key role in ensuring that the organization’s interventions reach the targeted beneficiaries. The program area is predominantly fish landing sites/ fishing communities of disadvantaged people with high rates of HIV/AIDS who are the beneficiaries. The most vulnerable includes PLWH, orphans, widows and other vulnerable children. SIAAP has treated over 250,000 patients over the last 15 years since inception. SIAAP today caters for 25,000 clients per year.
Our services and achievements include but not limited to the following:
Community HIV/ AIDS mobilization and sensitization
HIV counselling and testing services (HCT)
Antiretroviral (ART) therapy enrollment
Treatment of opportunistic infection
HIV Supportive counselling
Medical treatment camps (General medical treatment)
Safe male medical circumcision.
Family planning and condom distribution
Pregnant mothers on treatment and counselling (PMTC)
Referrals.
The HIV/AIDS problem in Kalangala is worse than the rest of the nation because of the nature and life style of the residents. According to the 2016 AIDS Commission report, the community is classified as “the most at risk” by the Ministry of Health due to the high incidents of HIV/AIDS with a prevalence rate of over 14 percent.
Some of SIAAP major recognition and awards include but not limited to the following:
