I solemnly swear I will not count calories… or slices…

Chocolate counts as a vegetable (it comes from beans, right?). So technically, we’re all eating healthy today. Absolutely zero guilt—just pure, frosted joy!

Happy National Hugging Day!

Why Hugs Matter

• Stress Reduction: Hugging triggers the release of oxytocin,
which can help lower stress and anxiety.
• Emotional Support: A hug can convey warmth, empathy, and understanding.
• Physical Health Benefits: Physical touch has been linked to lowered blood
pressure and reduced heart rate.
• Connection & Belonging: Hugs foster a sense of connection

While there is no hard-and-fast scientific rule for exactly how many hugs a person “should” get per day, a popular (though informal) guideline often cited comes from family therapist Virginia Satir, who famously said:
“We need 4 hugs a day for survival.”
“We need 8 hugs a day for maintenance.”
“We need 12 hugs a day for growth.”

Regular positive physical contact can be very beneficial for our emotional and even physical well-being.

Not a hugger? That's ok!
You might explore other positive forms of connection like a pat on the back, or a friendly arm around the shoulder. Ultimately, the key is nurturing a sense of closeness and support in whatever ways feel most comfortable for everyone involved.

Hug (or give a pat on the back) to your people (and your pets) today! 💕

"When I came to ORC I was badly mangled and full of fear. The kind and caring staff at ORC quieted my fears and let me know just how much they care. The experience I had was beyond all my expectations. The tools I have been given are just what I needed to carry me forward to a wonderful life in sobriety. I will always be grateful for my experience at ORC." - John P.

January is Substance Use Disorder Treatment Month—a time to raise awareness on substance use disorders, offer support, share resources, and break down barriers that keep people from seeking help.

Join the webinar, Substance Use Disorder 101, this Wednesday, January 8th where foundational knowledge about substance use disorders (SUDs), what they are, their risk factors, and how they develop, will be discussed. The session will also lay the foundation for why treatments, including medications and other services, are effective and important in helping people manage and support recovery from SUDs.
