Mental health plays a major role in maternal outcomes. In Kentucky, 33% of all maternal deaths had mental health as a contributing factor. Supporting moms means supporting their mental health during pregnancy and long after delivery.

Stay safe during winter weather by putting together an emergency car kit with essentials like water, non-perishable food, blankets and a first-aid kit. A little prep goes a long way. Learn more ways to be winter weather ready by visiting: ready.gov/winter-ready

We are closely monitoring the approaching winter storm and working with Lewis County Emergency Management, the Road Department, and our first responders to ensure we are prepared for the conditions ahead.

Our crews are preparing now and will work throughout the storm to keep county roadways cleared and as safe as possible. However, we ask for patience and understanding, as heavy snow and ice can make travel extremely dangerous and may limit the rate of improvement.

The safety of our citizens is our top priority, including that of the first responders and road crews who will be out in these hazardous conditions. These men and women will be working long hours to serve our community, and we ask motorists to use caution, slow down, and avoid unnecessary travel when conditions worsen.

I urge all residents to take this storm seriously, be prepared at home with supplies, stay weather aware, and check on neighbors — especially the elderly and those who may need assistance. Your cooperation and preparedness are critical to keeping everyone safe.

Lewis County will continue to provide updates as conditions change. Please stay safe and look out for one another.

This week we shared what Social Determinants of Health (SDoH) are — all the things in our lives that affect how healthy we can be, like housing, transportation, food access, education, and support systems.

That’s exactly where our BRIDGE program comes in.

BRIDGE stands for
Building Resilience and Independence through Dedicated Guidance and Education,
and it’s designed to help people overcome those real-life barriers that make staying healthy harder than it should be.

With BRIDGE, we can help Lewis County residents:
• Find a doctor or get connected to care
• Apply for insurance or programs like SNAP, Medicaid, or WIC
• Access transportation and food resources
• Navigate mental health and recovery support
• Get referrals to local services — and follow through
• Problem-solve life challenges with someone in your corner

Sometimes health requires more than a prescription — it requires support, guidance, and knowing where to turn.

If you or someone you know could use a little help connecting the dots, call us at 606-796-2632 and ask about the BRIDGE program.
You don’t have to figure it all out alone. 💙

🌟 January is Social Determinants of Health Month! 🌟

When we talk about “health,” most people think of doctor visits and medicine — but that’s only a small piece of the picture.

Social Determinants of Health (SDoH) are everything in our daily lives that impact how healthy we are, such as:
• Income and job security
• Access to healthy food and clean drinking water
• Safe housing and transportation
• Sidewalks, parks, and places to exercise
• Education and literacy
• Social support and strong community connections
• Phone and internet access
• Quality health care

These factors shape how easy — or how hard — it is for someone to stay well.

Public health is built on improving these conditions for everyone.
When we support safer neighborhoods, expand access to care, improve education, or help someone connect with local resources, we’re improving health before a medical issue even starts.

Lewis County is seeing an increase in pertussis (whooping cough).
This isn’t a reason for worry, just something to be aware of so we can take simple steps to keep everyone healthy.

💡What to know

Pertussis spreads like many common illnesses
It can cause a long-lasting cough, especially in young children
Most people recover fully with medical care
Vaccination helps protect infants, children, and adults

💡Everyday precautions still make a big difference

Stay home when sick
Cover coughs and sneezes
Wash hands often
Check that routine vaccines are up to date

If you or your child has a cough that isn’t getting better, especially one that causes trouble breathing or vomiting, call your healthcare provider for guidance.
