Wednesday Win!

Nothing gives a practitioner more joy than hearing a success story from a client or their family and a client flying 2,000+ miles was HUGE! What was this recipe for success?

1️⃣ The team created a social story that walked through all the steps of flying on an airplane. ✈️ Collaboration with the caregiver was key in developing the most successful way to prepare the client for what to expect. The team read the social story for the weeks and days leading up to the trip.

2️⃣ The family connected with Transportation Security Administration - TSA Cares to discuss needed accommodations prior to the trip: https://www.tsa.gov/contact-center/form/cares Follow the link or watch the video below to learn more!

3️⃣ The family came prepared with everything possible to help the client feel relaxed and supported throughout the journey 🎧🐑🥪

The unsung hero’s of this success story were the amazing TSA Agents at Portland International Airport. The family was gushing over their level of care that lead to a successful experience. With deepest gratitude, thank you!

At Developmental Services and Care, play is a priority. Therapy should always put fun at the forefront of any learning opportunity. Why is play so important?

🌟Play creates a safe and trusting environment, which lays the foundation for a therapeutic relationship built on care and collaboration.

🌟Play fosters connection through shared joy; the most progress is made when every participant is having fun.

🌟Play encourages engagement through turn-taking, initiating, responding, asserting preferences, verbal and non-verbal communication, and SO much more.

🌟Play skills generalize to other adaptive skills such as accessing sensory input, practicing difficult routines through imaginary play, and learning how to regulate with play to prevent under-stimulation and boredom.

🌟Play empower’s the individual to lead, which builds confidence and autonomy.

Sometimes play is fueled by The Five Little Pumpkins nursery rhyme. We practiced emotions, reciprocal communication, and requesting all while having fun together.

On Friday we hosted Caregiver's Night Out! While caregiver's get a few hours to themselves, we practiced many skills with clients and their siblings through play.

We were able to practice sharing, turn-taking, transitioning, responding safely to frustrations, tolerating losing, requesting breaks, fine motor practice through coloring and painting coloring "egg rocks", and object permanence through an egg hunt!

Practice what a travel day could look like without a boarding pass! On Wednesday, we'll be hosting an Autism Acceptance Day event alongside our amazing partners—including KultureCity, the Autism Society of Oregon, and ARC of Oregon.

Registered guests can get a guest pass to go through airport security, practice TSA screening, and explore PDX, including our sensory room. It’s a great way to get familiar with the airport in a low-pressure setting.

RSVP now on Eventbrite and join us in making travel more accessible for the autism community: https://bit.ly/4hKSwf6
