Feeling anxious is a normal part of the human experience, but it shouldn’t cost us our confidence or our presence. While anxiety is a vital survival tool designed to keep us safe, it can at times become a debilitating intrusion. Anxiety is our body's way to prepare for "fight or flight". It's a state of vigilance or our mind's "sentry" mode, preparing for a perceived threat. But when anxiety is hyper-vigilant against unlikely or improbable threats, it unintentionally robs us of our ability to enjoy the moment and overlooks our proven strengths and past successes.
Learning to treat anxiety as a helpful co-pilot rather than the person in the driver’s seat takes time. Counseling supports this recalibration, helping our internal alarm system to slow down on "misperceiving" false threats, to integrate current strengths and to remember past successes. Counselors are here to support you with that process so your anxiety's strength of being prepared for future events isn't robbing you of your enjoyment & investment of the present.
