Highest You Health LLC Hello! I'm Hayley, a clinical nutritionist with a Master's of Science in Nutrition and Functional Me How am I different from other nutritionists?

As a clinical nutritionist trained in functional medicine, the work we do together gets to the root cause of your symptoms/illness, so your body can heal naturally. Our bodies are self-healing machines when two things happen: 1. The body has what it needs; adequate nutrients + nutrient absorption, quality sleep, hydration, movement, stress management, self love/care and healthy relationships. 2. O

ffending or toxic factors are removed (environmental toxicants, gut health issues, poor sleep, stress, un-serving thoughts, ultra-processed foods.. Research shows that our genes are responsible for only about 10% of our lifespan and health-span. What is health-span? It's living a long AND healthy life. As you age, you maintain health, vitality and function into late years. This suggests that about 90% of our health span is influenced by diet and lifestyle (epigenetic). Functional nutrition takes a whole-body/ whole-person view to overall health and addresses health a a whole-systems approach. When you change one part of the system, you are fundamentally changing the whole. My practices focuses on the health of the gut microbiome and I specialize in chronic fatigue, hormone balances, sleep issues, pain and inflammation, mood disorders (depression/anxiety), fertility support, autoimmunity and nutritional support for recreational fitness activity. Head on over to my website to schedule a FREE 20-Minute call to learn how functional nutrition can get you back to feeling the best you've ever felt!

🌻On weekends, we eat pancakes!! Filling, blood sugar friendly, gut healthy pancakes…

Recipe (serves 1)

Ingredients:
✔️ 1 Medium-Large greenish banana
✔️ 2 eggs
✔️ ¼ cup GF rolled oats
✔️ 2 Tablespoons psyllium husk
✔️ Optional: dash of cinnamon

1. Heat up pan with some coconut oil

2. Add greenish banana, two eggs, and 1/4 cup of gluten-free organic rolled oats to a blender

3. Blend well on medium until oats are fine. Turn off blender

4. Next, add 2 tablespoons of psyllium husk, blend again for a short time (~5-7 seconds) before the batter becomes too viscous from the fiber.

5. Immediately pour the batter into pan with oil. If it sits too long it will thicken. Cook for about 2-3 mins per side

Add toppings! I like almond butter and monk fruit syrup

This pancake is more filling and blood sugar + gut friendly than a traditional pancake for a few reasons:

Choosing a banana that is more green means it contains less sugar (it’s also less sweet) and it has resistant starch, a prebiotic fiber that feeds good bacteria in your gut.

-This pancake contains 22g of protein from the eggs, nut butter and oats. The protein + fat (from the nut butter) slows gastric emptying + promotes satiety

-The psyllium husk is a soluble fiber providing a boost of satiety and prebiotic fiber + it gives the pancake a nice texture (IMO)

-Monk fruit does not raise blood sugar. A little bit of pure maple syrup is a great option too if you dislike the taste of Monk fruit. Or top with some berries!

If cooking for two, I suggest doing 1 Cake at a time because of the thickening properties of the psyllium.

Enjoy! Happy 1st Sunday of 2021 😘

When you start something new, those first steps are always the most challenging. In the beginning there is a lack of skill, comfortability, familiarity and momentum.

Extra time, extra brain power and mistakes are to be expected at the beginning. Feeling resistance is normal.

When you expect it to be hard, it's your mindset that will carry you through to the next small step. "This is hard, but I can do hard things"

Start slow and perfect those small habits

It's the small, daily steps you take again and again that matter.

- Think about one little thing you could start to shift and the impact it will have on your life in 10 years if you are consistent.

- I love the example of brushing your teeth. Imagine how your oral health and overall health would be if you didn't brush your teeth or go to the dentist for 10 years. Plaque, cavities, decay, gum disease, all your teeth fall out.... The simple act of brushing your teeth for two min 2X/day has a HUGE impact on your health.

Same thing with eating 1 extra serving of vegetables/day

Same thing with moving your body for an extra 5 minutes/day if you are fairly sedentary

Same thing with getting an additional 30 minutes of quality sleep if you aren't already sleeping enough.

Same thing with drinking an extra glass of water..

Pick one small thing and build on slowly. Small habits have a snowball effect. Overtime you accumulate several small habits that add up and make a massive difference.

oh and definitely keep brushing your teeth :)

Happy New Year everyone!

🤓 I wrote my Thesis paper on the link between the gut microbiome and mental health (there are already tons of human/mouse studies on this topic). It is exciting that new research is continually confirming that the composition of the gut microbiome in depressed individuals (****in this paper it was mice) is significantly different than the composition of the microbiome of individuals (**mice) without depression. When you nurture your gut microbiome, you are also nurturing your brain. Your mental health is intimately connected to your gut health.

🤯 If you are making efforts to support your mental health, it is crucial that you pay attention to what you put in your body. It is challenging to engage in your mental health when your body is inflamed (as a result of a compromised gut).

I don't have time
I don't know how
It runs in my family
I can't afford that
I'll never be able to do that because I (fill in the blank)
I'm too old
It's too late
I'm not smart enough

If you fight for these limitations you get to keep them and they become your story.

Change the story and change your life.

Your beliefs are just practiced and repeated thoughts.

Your brain is not fixed. You are not fixed. You can change and do whatever you put your mind to. Practice and active learning makes progress y'all.

Have a beautiful weekend! Don't forget to eat good food, get good sleep and move your body (these help your brain so you can improve your thoughts!)

One of my favorite posts from talks about the 'epidemic of leakiness' Many people have heard the term leaky gut ~ when the integrity of our digestive tract is compromised, allowing foreign substances through and chronically activating our immune system. But it isn't just our leaky guts that lead to imbalance. We can have leaky brains, leaky cell membranes, leaky mitochondria, Leaky psychological boundaries, leaky hearts, leaky thoughts, leaky time and leaky relationships.

These leaky boundaries make us less resilient and over time show up as symptoms. It isn't just nutrition and exercise that repairs the leakiness. Its sleep, community, connection to purpose, planning, boundaries and self-love.

What is something you can do to start repairing some of the leaks?

Ladies do you experience menstrual-related migraines or brain fog?

First,it is important to note that inflammation, food sensitivities and blood sugar dysregulation can be contributing factors. Some common foods that have been shown to be linked with migraines include:

Wheat, orange, eggs, coffee & tea, milk, chocolate, beef, corn, cane sugar and yeast. When common trigger foods are eliminated there is typically a dramatic drop in incidence of migraines.

You can experiment with eliminating some of these foods for a period of time to see if you notice a difference.

Finally, another common cause is related to the Serotonin dump in the brain when estrogen rises during your cycle (mid follicular and mid luteal). Estrogen has potent serotonin-modulating properties.

When estrogen rises, it crosses the blood brain barrier then hypersensitizes serotonin receptors, aka causes a spike of serotonin in the brain. You end up with a whole lot of serotonin in the brain and not much reuptake. This can cause the migraine/brain fog. Then, serotonin starts to translocate and takes over some of the tryptophan receptor sites in the brain.

So what can you do about the serotonin dump?

Consume more Leucine! Leucine is an amino acid that can cross the blood brain barrier and counters the serotonin dump that may be causing brain fog/migraines. This is because lucine effects the tryptophan receptor sites in the brain (where serotonin translocates).

The protein source with the highest leucine content is WHEY- bay- bay. WHEY contains some dairy. If you have an issue with dairy, Whey isolate processes out most of the lactose so it is more tolerable. When choosing a high quality protein pow pow, make sure to check that it has the GMP label and has been third party tested.

If you have been tracking your cycle and symptoms, try incorporating more leucine into your diet around the time things start to get foggy.

Let me know if this helps! 💓

There once was a time when I set goals from a dirty place, a place of not being enough. This ultimately caused me to feel shame and weaken my trust muscle. Now, when I set goals, I really check in with myself and make sure it’s coming from a clean place. Here are some goal setting nuggets since 2021 is just around the corner and goal setting season is on the horizon.

🐵 Goal setting is not about the result that you get, it’s about the person you become along the way. Unicorns don’t come from the sky and shower you with happiness and self-worth when you reach your goal. Happiness isn’t over there, happiness is available to you right now. You are already worthy, AND you can intentionally choose to set a goal and transform.

🐵When goal setting comes from a dirty place it comes from a place of lack, feeling like you have something to prove or approval to gain. Or, thinking that once you reach your goal you will finally be happy, and everything will magically be better.

🦁It is ok to want more, to want something different, to want to grow, expand and transform. But how do you know if your goal setting is coming from a clean place?

Clean goal setting:

🦄It won’t feel rushed
🦄 Your WHY makes you feel good not bad, it’s coming from a place of self-love. Not a place of lack or not enough-ness
🦄If you fail, you fail forward and keep moving. You learn from your mistakes and adjust, instead of making the mistakes mean something about you.
🦄You are excited about adding in new healthy habits, facing fears, expanding, and getting outside of your comfort zone.
🦄You set the goal because you know that through the process of achieving it you will become a higher version of yourself along the journey. You understand that your worth does not depend on the accomplishment of the goal. You are simply choosing to accomplish the goal because you want to expand in some way that feeds your souls purpose.

Let's be gentle on ourselves in 2021 and choose clean goals 💕

You are not your thoughts.

A foundational way to understand this is to think of your thoughts like an object you can see in the room you are currently in. A plant, pillow, mug, table ect.

How do we know there is a table? We are the subject looking at the table. We are the watcher as the subject, looking at the table as the object.

In the same way in your mind, you are able to watch your thoughts. The object = your thoughts and feelings. You are the subject and you are not your thoughts.

At first this can be challenging. Meditation and breathwork can be great tools to create distance between you and your thoughts, so you can better observe them instead of reacting to them. Also, giving your ego (thoughts) a name and labeling it as your roommate can be helpful. " My roommate Barb" --- Barb likes to look for problems....

This work is powerful (and necessary) when creating behavior change.
What is your roommate (ego) saying about ________? and How does it make you feel? What actions result from this?

Just start to notice :)
