Now that school is back in session, here are some tips for ensuring our kids don't suffer from backpack pain!
* Buy the proper size. Backpacks come in multiple sizes. Be sure to buy one that won’t overwhelm your child’s body.
* Pack it well. Larger, heavier items should go on the bottom, building up like a pyramid. If the backpack has side and zipper pockets, equalize the weight by utilizing those spaces.
* Don’t overpack. Resist the temptation to overweight the backpack, which can put unnecessary strain on your child’s spine. Unpack and repack daily to remove items that are needed for the day.
* Wear both straps. To put all the weight on one shoulder puts all the strain on one side of the body. Anyone wearing a backpack should use both straps.
* Try to find a backpack with a front clip. Some backpacks have front clips to help even out the back to front and back of the body.
* Readjust the straps. Be sure to adjust the straps to your child’s body needs, ensuring the backpack isn’t hanging down, causing extra strain on the neck and shoulders.

Your breath is an immediate gauge of your health. In states of stress our breath becomes faster, but many of us live in this state. Respiration is reciprocation. Recent studies have shown that breathwork is superior to meditation, but you will be ahead of the curve with a daily practice of either. How is your breathing right now?

The easiest way to improve your breathing is to practice daily. Stronger posture will improve the ability of your diaphragm to initiate respiration. You can remind yourself to pull your shoulders back, and breathe through your nose. One full breath might just relieve the stress you have been carrying all day, and you can’t help but stand/sit taller.

If you’ve been a patient of Dr. Halcumb, you’ve probably already heard him remind you to breathe with your nose. It’s your own filtration system due to the hairs in your nostrils. In the following weeks, we’ll share some easy breathing techniques and ways to also improve your posture.

We are excited to announce that we have secured an additional clinic location in Woodland, WA.

Our clinic located in Woodland will offer the same services as the Vancouver location, and also a few added amenities including sauna and cold plunge. Cold plunge is great for recovery. Additionally, research shows that sauna and cold therapy improves vascular and respiratory health.

Our social media will ramp up in the next months to document our journey and passion for chiropractic care to support anyone looking to improve the quality of their life. You might find our care helpful as an athlete, someone healing from an injury, or everyday aches and pains. We pride ourselves on providing patient care that is personal and unique.

It is no coincidence that the new clinic location is walking distance from The Base Woodland, run by my brother and sister-in-law. It has been a dream of our family to open a gym where we can share our passion for jiu jitsu in a family environment, like the The Base Vancouver has provided us for many years.

We are training our bodies to perform how we would like. If we fail to give it adequate input, it performs inadequately.

Posture is simply the way with which you balance your body. Many are unaware of the impacts poor posture can have on your health. Most importantly, adding daily posture habits to your life that are positive can have a huge impact on health and aging.

The weather is supposed to be warm and sunny 🌅 this whole week. Here's your reminder to get outside and be active.

Activity doesn't have to be an intense workout. It can be a walk to a park, a swim in a river, or a bike ride on one of Vancouver's many trails.

My family loves Salmon Creek Trail for biking, hiking, and sometimes fishing 🎣.
+
I like to say that "exercise is free." You can prevent a lot of ailments if you make a habit of activity every day.
