Know what a YES feels like in your body.
A NO feels nothing like a YES.
A couple of years ago, I watched someone lying in bed go through severe shock.
The trauma response was real. Their body was shaking uncontrollably, almost seizure-like, but it wasn’t a seizure. It was primal shaking, the kind even animals can experience after severe trauma.
I checked respiration rate, oxygen levels, and blood pressure. The vitals were out of range. He was diaphoretic.
Different person. Different situation.
I had seen something similar before, and in that case it was an immediate emergency.
Being awake and aware at 2 a.m., I made the call: the emergency room was next.
But this time, the shaking was different.
I knew the emergency room was not the answer.
This person was clearly in shock. Dissociated. Out of body. Responsive, but on autopilot. Experiencing a threat that felt completely real.
FEAR:
False Evidence Appearing Real.
This was the FREEZE response.
I had only ever seen this 1x and it looked very different than this.
The person was clearly FROZEN, unable to make sense of what was happening.
When your brain believes the threat is real, your body responds as if it is real, even when no actual danger is present.
PLACEBO feels real and creates real physiological responses in the body.
Some people can trigger you back into places that once felt threatening. Those places can feel so real that your body begins to shut down.
Dissociation is a survival response.
A person can experience complete amnesia around what is happening. They may be moving, speaking, functioning with their eyes wide open, yet have no real awareness of what they are doing. Completely on autopilot. Moving like a puppet.
And in that state, a person is deeply vulnerable.
Know what NO feels like in your body.
What I just described really happened. And it could have been avoided.
Establish strong YESES and strong NOs. Practice them regularly, so when the moment comes, your body already knows the truth.
No means NO.
Stop means STOP.
Yes means YES.
Know the difference.
Practice daily.
