⨠Eczema Awareness: Winter Care Tips âď¸
Winter can be especially tough for patients with eczema. Cold air, indoor heat, and low humidity all pull moisture from the skinâleading to flares, itching, and discomfort. Here are some dermatologist-approved tips to help keep skin calm this season:
1. Moisturize more often (and choose thicker formulas).
Look for creams or ointments instead of lotions. Apply within 3 minutes of bathing to lock in hydration.
2. Switch to gentle, fragrance-free products.
Avoid soaps and detergents with fragrance, dyes, or harsh surfactants. Sensitive skin needs simplicity in the winter months.
3. Take shorter, lukewarm showers.
Hot water can strip the skin barrier. Aim for 5â10 minutes and moisturize right after.
4. Use a humidifier at home.
Indoor heat dries the air dramaticallyâadding moisture back can make a big difference for skin comfort.
5. Wear soft, breathable fabrics.
Avoid wool and other rough materials directly on the skin. Layering with cotton can help reduce irritation.
6. Donât skip your treatment plan.
Winter isnât the time to cut back on prescription ointments, steroid creams, or non-steroidal treatments. Stay consistent and reach out if you need adjustments.
7. Know your triggers.
Stress, allergens, and fragrances can worsen eczemaâespecially when the skin barrier is already struggling from cold weather.
