My Story
I married my husband in 1990 and we were blessed with 3 amazing children who are now all adults and finding their own paths in life. We also had the privilege of opening our home to an additional 8 children over the years, some of them for a few days some for a few months and some for a few years. When we first started doing foster care, I thought I knew what to expect. I had already successfully navigated 3 children through the infant and toddler years and we were starting with kids under 3. I also had degrees in Human Development and Early Childhood Education. I could teach the classes that we attended to become foster parents.
I quickly learned that I really didn’t know much at all and the kids that were coming into our home didn’t behave or react the way our kids did to things like touch, eating, sleeping and some days just existing. I saw things I never thought I would see, tantrums that lasted HOURS or days, changing a diaper and seeing an infant dissociate (which at the time I didn’t have a name for). I later realized that when that baby froze on my changing table and I looked into her eyes but it looked like she wasn’t there, it was her way of protecting herself and a sign that something very traumatizing probably happened to her at some time while she was getting her diaper changed. I quickly realized that I was not as equipped as I had thought and started to learn as much as I could about children, trauma and attachment.
I went back to school and got my masters degree in Counseling. I worked with high risk kids in a residential facility and then moved into outpatient Child and Family counseling in Colorado and then later in the Seattle area. I got trained in EMDR and Play therapy, I worked with all ages of kids and their families.
My private practice, Walk in Hope started in Colorado Springs with the hope and vision that some day it would be my primary focus. I have been blessed with many opportunities over the years but through them all I have held on to the hope that one day Walk in Hope would be my primary focus. Since 2010, I have been able to see many clients in my private practice while also working full time.
