FAILED BACK SURGERY SYNDROME PAIN:
How Common? Chiropractic Helped Reduce Pain and Opioid Use
Researchers stated that degenerative disc disease and low back pain turns into chronic low back pain for many after back surgery discectomy. They also reported that nearly 15% of back surgery patients had failed back surgical syndrome (FBSS) with back pain extending beyond 6 months post-surgery. (1) Chiropractic care is well-known for its conservative treatment of back pain and neck pain.
Now, the chiropractic Cox® Technic System of Spinal Pain Management, Used by Vancouver Disc Center of America, is showing itself as beneficial for relieving post-surgical FBSS spine pain.
A retrospective study of 69 such patients treated by 15 chiropractors experienced in applying Cox® Technic protocols documented greater than 50% relief of pain for 81% of patients in a mean of 11 visits over a 49-day period of active care.
This relief at the end of care continued at 2 years follow-up: 78.6% continued with relief. The percentage of relief remained high: 71.6% at the end of care and 70% at 24 months. (2) In a prospective study of patients treated with Cox® Technic, 8 of 11 post-surgical FBSS patients reported reduced or discontinued opioid use. (3) We are here to help relieve FBSS back pain that lingers after back surgery and get you back to enjoying life!

03/14/2026

Spinal hydration refers to the fluid content within the intervertebral discs, particularly the nucleus pulposus, which is composed largely of water bound to proteoglycans. In a healthy disc, hydration levels can approach 70–90% in youth, allowing the disc to function as a viscoelastic shock absorber. This water content enables the spine to distribute compressive loads evenly, maintain disc height, and preserve foraminal spacing for exiting nerve roots. Disc hydration fluctuates diurnally—typically higher in the morning after recumbency and reduced by the end of the day due to axial loading.

Loss of spinal hydration is a central component of degenerative disc pathology. Reduced proteoglycan concentration impairs the disc’s ability to attract and retain water, leading to diminished intradiscal pressure, annular stress, and progressive disc height loss. Biomechanically, this alters segmental load transfer, increases facet joint stress, and may contribute to bulging, herniation, or spinal stenosis. Clinically, patients may present with axial pain, radiculopathy, stiffness, or reduced mobility. MRI T2-weighted imaging commonly reflects hydration status, with darker discs indicating desiccation.

Strategies that support spinal hydration focus on mechanical unloading, controlled movement, and systemic hydration. Interventions such as spinal decompression therapy aim to reduce intradiscal pressure, potentially facilitating nutrient diffusion and fluid reabsorption through the cartilaginous endplates. Regular movement enhances diffusion-based nutrient exchange, as discs are largely avascular. Adequate water intake, anti-inflammatory nutrition, and load management further support disc matrix integrity. While structural degeneration cannot always be reversed, optimizing disc hydration may improve biomechanical function and symptom expression.

Chiropractic adjustments can help improve sleep quality by reducing pain, decreasing muscle tension, and calming the nervous system. By addressing spinal misalignments, chiropractic care helps relieve discomfort that causes restlessness and promotes relaxation, allowing for deeper, more restorative sleep. (Wash. State Chiropractic Association)

Key ways chiropractic care supports better sleep include:

Pain Reduction:
Relieving chronic pain—particularly in the back, neck, or hips—makes it easier to fall and stay asleep.

Nervous System Regulation:
Adjustments reduce nerve interference, helping balance the autonomic nervous system, thereby decreasing stress and promoting relaxation.

Muscle Tension Release:
Aligning the spine helps release tight muscles that cause restlessness.

Improved Circulation:
Proper alignment enhances blood flow, which may reduce physical symptoms such as leg discomfort that can interrupt sleep.

While not a direct cure for chronic insomnia, many patients report significant improvements in sleep quality—including for issues like sleep apnea and Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS)—after regular, consistent adjustments.
(Washington State Chiropractic Association)

Schedule an evaluation soon to see whether you have lower back pain, shoulder pain, or other treatable physical ailments that may be contributing to loss of sleep.

Golf is heating up in the great NorthWet!
Would you like to improve your game?
One easy way is to care for your body - chiropractic therapy can help you strengthen your back by eliminating pain and spine issues.
When your spine causes you pain due to misalignment or other issues like sciatica, herniated discs, and more, it will never respond while you are currently out on the course. Pain can cause you to automatically realign yourself to compensate, or your back muscles can tighten in response.
Schedule an evaluation soon to see if you suffer from lower back pain, shoulder pain, or other physical ailments that can be treated.

WHEN BACK SURGERY ISN'T ENOUGH-
How Cox® Technic Offers Hope for Relief

Persistent back pain following back surgery presents a significant challenge, with traditional approaches often providing limited relief. Cox® Technic, a specialized form of chiropractic distraction spinal manipulation used in our practice, offers a promising conservative treatment option. This gentle technique utilizes a specially designed table for controlled flexion and distraction of the lumbar spine, creating decompression while mobilizing restricted segments.

Research demonstrates Cox® Technic's clinical effectiveness for post-surgical pain. Gudavalli et al. (2016) examined patients with continued low back and radicular pain following spinal surgeries, finding significant improvements in both pain levels and functional disability scores after Cox® Technic treatment.
(1) Additionally, Trager et al. (2024) found that patients receiving chiropractic care, including distraction techniques, had lower surgical re-operation rates compared to those without conservative manual therapy.
(2)Cox® Technic's effectiveness stems from its ability to create negative intradiscal pressure, promote nutrient exchange, and restore normal spinal biomechanics without aggressive manipulation. This makes it particularly suitable for post-surgical patients requiring gentle, precise treatment that respects altered spinal anatomy while addressing ongoing pain and dysfunction.

Listen to this PODCAST with Dr. Marc Baker on The Back Doctors Podcast with Dr. Michael Johnson about the effectiveness of The Cox® Technic System of Spinal Pain Management for continued back pain after back surgery.

Beyond The Image: Understanding Your Spine through Clinical Care
You’re hurting, and you want answers—we get it. Nothing feels more reassuring than seeing an actual image of your spine and pointing to what might be causing your pain. But here’s something that might surprise you: what shows up on your MRI or X-ray often doesn’t match what you’re actually feeling. An interesting 2025 study found that people with severe spinal stenosis visible on scans sometimes have zero pain, while others with “perfect-looking” spines are in agony. (1) Wild, right? Another recent study captured what many patients feel: “it’s hard to trust an individual, it’s easier to trust an image.” (2) We understand that completely. But here’s the truth—your chiropractor’s hands-on assessment, combined with thoughtfully interpreting your imaging, tells your real story. It’s not about dismissing those scans; it’s about getting the complete picture of what’s really going on with your body so we can help you feel better. Let’s discuss both your imaging and clinical assessment findings to develop a comprehensive treatment approach tailored specifically to you.

CHIROPRACTIC TIP OF THE MONTH: Try Exercise to Help Reduce Lumbar Spinal Stenosis Pain
Exercise provides substantial benefits for patients with lumbar spinal stenosis, effectively reducing pain and improving function through flexibility, strengthening, and aerobic components. Importantly, stenosis severity does not affect treatment responsiveness, meaning even patients with advanced stenosis can achieve meaningful improvements. This evidence supports exercise as a primary conservative treatment, offering a non-invasive approach to manage symptoms and enhance mobility before considering surgical options. (3,4) Let’s chat at your next appointment about the best exercise for you.

WHAT ABOUT CHIROPRACTIC CARE KEEPS YOU COMING BACK?
Surveys. Reviews. Testimonials. They’re everywhere. But what’s most important? How is the care for YOU! A recent Danish survey found that 97% of patients reported a ‘very high’ or ‘high’ degree of overall satisfaction with their chiropractic care. What influenced that? Personal experience, clear communication about treatment effectiveness and outcome, comprehensive examination, and reassurance.

(1) These patients aren't just satisfied with their care—they're genuinely enthusiastic about it. What makes this satisfaction particularly compelling is that it's backed by real, measurable science. Amjad et al.

(2) demonstrated that 12 weeks of chiropractic spinal adjustments led to measurable improvements in blood biomarkers linked to neuroplasticity, inflammation, and stress, providing objective evidence of the body's positive physiological response to treatment. Additionally, Nyirö et al.

(3) found that spinal manipulation enhances the body's proprioception—essentially, how well your spine "knows where it is" in space—and directly linked these improvements to pain relief. In other words, patients love their chiropractic care for good reason: it's triggering genuine physiological changes that help them feel better, from the cellular level to the way their nervous system processes pain and movement.

We strive to provide the personal, pain-relieving care that keeps you coming back!
