Warrior Highlight: The Winged Hussars
The Polish Winged Hussars were the elite heavy cavalry of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth from the 16th to the 18th centuries.
Known for the large feathered frames mounted to their armor, they became one of the most feared shock cavalry forces in Europe. Hussars charged into battle with long lances called kopias, supported by sabers and pistols once the initial impact broke enemy formations.
Their discipline, speed, and devastating charges allowed them to defeat armies much larger than their own. At the Battle of Vienna in 1683, their massive cavalry assault helped lift the Ottoman siege, cementing their place among history’s legendary warriors.
