“More Than Words: The Power of Connection”
When communicating with someone living with Alzheimer’s, connection matters more than correction. Alzheimer’s affects memory, understanding, and language—but emotions remain strong. One way we truly connect is by using the Hand-under-Hand® technique – offer support, not control. We also use simple, gentle communication as well as patience and presence.
This week, Jo, our Resident Care Coordinator from Bellingham, beautifully modeled this during an assessment for a loved one living with dementia that is unable to hold her own cup. Husband shared he has just been feeding her and holding her cups, but Jo could see she had good dexterity. Jo went and got her an Ensure and a glass of water and she chugged both - first half of the Ensure Jo used the Hand-under-Hand® technique, when Jo put the glass down, the loved one reached for the cup and drank it on her own! Jo said, “It was a very cool moment.”
A powerful reminder:
✨ Connection unlocks possibility and skills build dignity.
