NAMI Southwest Washington

NAMI Southwest Washington NAMI Southwest Washington is dedicated to all people affected by mental illness through education Each state also has a state organization.

We are dedicated to helping all individuals and families struggling with mental health challenges through education, support, advocacy, and awareness. We provide unique mental health services that otherwise are unavailable or inaccessible for many individuals and families. All of our services are offered at no charge and are confidential. NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, is the largest grassroots mental health organization in the nation, headquartered in Virginia. Communities or counties within the states have affiliate organizations. Many affiliates work under their own independent non-profit charter. NAMI SW WA was first chartered in the late 1970's. We Believe That:
• People can learn to manage their mental health diagnosis and can and will take responsibility for their recovery
• People with a mental health diagnosis are entitled to live the highest quality of life possible, in their own communities of choice
• Family and social support are essential for recovery
• Family members can learn how to cope and determine
how best to take care of themselves

NAMI advocates for access to mental health services, treatment, and support; we are steadfast in commitment to raising awareness and building a supportive community for individuals and they families who are affected by mental illness.

Today, we honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. — a leader whose courage, compassion, and unwavering commitment to justice continue to inspire generations.

Dr. King taught us that true community is built through empathy, understanding, and the belief that every person deserves dignity and care. His message echoes powerfully in the world of mental health:
✨ Everyone deserves to be seen, supported, and valued.

As we reflect today, may we recommit to building a community rooted in compassion, connection, and hope. A community where no one struggles alone. A community where every voice matters.

Blaine has supported his wife through her journey with bipolar disorder, anxiety, and high-functioning schizophrenia. There have been hospital stays, medication changes, su***de attempts, and countless hard days—but through it all, she’s still here, still fighting, and he’s still standing beside her.

Now, Blaine is turning his personal journey into purpose—advocating for mental health awareness at work and beyond.

Young people are navigating a world full of pressure, change, and uncertainty — and their mental health matters now more than ever. When youth feel seen, supported, and understood, they’re more likely to build resilience, confidence, and hope for the future.

We believe trusted adults play a powerful role in youth wellbeing. That’s why we offer our Trusted Adult program, which helps adults learn how to build strong, supportive relationships with young people, use a strength-based approach to healthy development, and know when and how to access professional support when it’s needed.

When adults come together to support youth, we help create a web of care that no young person has to face alone. 💚

Learn more about how you can be part of that support system and help young people thrive. https://namiswwa.org/education/trusted-adult/

At last year's Shine the Light Su***de Prevention & Awareness Summit, we were honored to hear Jenny Thrasher share her powerful message.

Her words remind us that resilience doesn’t mean we have to push through life forever on sheer willpower. With support, community, and hope, we can move from surviving with grit to truly thriving with ease. 💙💜

Together, we shine the light on hope, healing, and connection.

Every January, we’re told it’s time to reinvent ourselves — new goals, new habits, a “better” version of who we were before. But if you’re navigating mental health challenges, that pressure can feel overwhelming.

At NAMI Southwest Washington, we want to share a different message as the year begins:
✨ You don’t need to become someone new to be worthy of care, healing, or hope.

Mental health doesn’t follow a calendar. Healing doesn’t reset on January 1. If you’re entering this year feeling tired, uncertain, or still carrying last year’s weight, you’re not behind — you’re human.

For years, Jill lived with PTSD in silence — believing their trauma defined them and that healing might never be possible. They isolated themselves, carrying fear, exhaustion, and memories they didn’t know how to share. 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐝 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝 𝐚 𝐍𝐀𝐌𝐈 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐩.

Through connection, shared stories, and perspective, they learned that healing doesn’t mean erasing the past — it means moving forward without letting trauma control your life. 🌱

If you’re struggling with PTSD or another mental health condition, support is available. You don’t have to do this on your own. Read Jill's full story, or find a NAMI Support Group here: https://namiswwa.org/jills-story-ptsd-nami-support-groups/

Talking about mental health helps people seek support sooner — and that can change lives. When conversations are open, honest, and compassionate, stigma loses its power and people feel less alone in what they’re experiencing.

Checking in on a friend, sharing your own story, or simply listening without judgment can create space for someone to take that first step toward help. Every conversation matters. 💚

Let’s keep talking — because support starts with being heard.
