NAMI Southwest Washington

NAMI Southwest Washington NAMI Southwest Washington is dedicated to all people affected by mental illness through education Each state also has a state organization.

We are dedicated to helping all individuals and families struggling with mental health challenges through education, support, advocacy, and awareness. We provide unique mental health services that otherwise are unavailable or inaccessible for many individuals and families. All of our services are offered at no charge and are confidential. NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, is the largest grassroots mental health organization in the nation, headquartered in Virginia. Communities or counties within the states have affiliate organizations. Many affiliates work under their own independent non-profit charter. NAMI SW WA was first chartered in the late 1970's. We Believe That:
• People can learn to manage their mental health diagnosis and can and will take responsibility for their recovery
• People with a mental health diagnosis are entitled to live the highest quality of life possible, in their own communities of choice
• Family and social support are essential for recovery
• Family members can learn how to cope and determine
how best to take care of themselves

NAMI advocates for access to mental health services, treatment, and support; we are steadfast in commitment to raising awareness and building a supportive community for individuals and they families who are affected by mental illness.

Sometimes the most powerful thing someone can experience is simply being understood.

For many people navigating mental health challenges, it can feel exhausting to explain what they’re going through or to worry that others won’t truly understand.

Maria shared that when she connected with a NAMI support group, something shifted. For the first time, she didn’t feel like she had to justify her feelings or explain every detail of her struggles. She was surrounded by people who simply got it.

James is the person who always shows up early. He volunteers. He keeps commitments. He seems calm, dependable, and organized. But behind the scenes, his mind rarely slows down. His thoughts race. His body stays on edge. He’s constantly preparing for worst-case scenarios while trying to keep everything together.

This is what high-functioning anxiety can look like. From the outside, everything appears fine. Inside, it can feel like running a mental marathon every single day.

This month, we recognize and celebrate the dedication, compassion, and tireless work of social workers in our community and beyond.

From helping individuals navigate mental health systems to connecting families with vital resources, social workers play a critical role in strengthening the wellbeing of our communities.

We are grateful for the social workers who partner with us, support our community members, and advocate for better mental health care every day. Thank you for the empathy you bring, the voices you amplify, and the hope you help create.

Our support groups, education programs, and outreach continue. If you need help, you can still reach us. No one should face mental illness alone.

We will share updates if anything changes. For now, our focus remains the same: serving families in Southwest Washington with hope, help, and healing.

Grief is something every person experiences, but no two journeys look the same.

Some people cry openly. Others grow quiet. Some talk about their loss often, while others carry it privately. Grief can show up as sadness, anger, exhaustion, confusion, or even moments of peace and reflection. There is no “correct” way to grieve, and there is no timeline for healing.

If you or someone you love is navigating loss, remember that support is available. Talking about grief, connecting with others, and allowing yourself space to process your emotions are important parts of healing.

NAMI Ending the Silence is an in-school presentation about mental health designed for high school students. Students can learn about mental illness directly from the family members and individuals living with mental illness themselves.

Although only a short, 50 minute presentation, NAMI Ending the Silence is effective at raising awareness, encouraging early identification and intervention and giving a human face to mental illness.

Learn more or schedule a presentation here: https://namiswwa.org/advocacy/ending-the-silence/
