NAMI Southwest Washington

NAMI Southwest Washington NAMI Southwest Washington is dedicated to all people affected by mental illness through education Each state also has a state organization.

We are dedicated to helping all individuals and families struggling with mental health challenges through education, support, advocacy, and awareness. We provide unique mental health services that otherwise are unavailable or inaccessible for many individuals and families. All of our services are offered at no charge and are confidential. NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, is the large

st grassroots mental health organization in the nation, headquartered in Virginia. Communities or counties within the states have affiliate organizations. Many affiliates work under their own independent non-profit charter. NAMI SW WA was first chartered in the late 1970's. We Believe That:
• People can learn to manage their mental health diagnosis and can and will take responsibility for their recovery
• People with a mental health diagnosis are entitled to live the highest quality of life possible, in their own communities of choice
• Family and social support are essential for recovery
• Family members can learn how to cope and determine
how best to take care of themselves

NAMI advocates for access to mental health services, treatment, and support; we are steadfast in commitment to raising awareness and building a supportive community for individuals and they families who are affected by mental illness.

April is National Autism Awareness Month, a time to grow understanding, reduce stigma, and help create communities where autistic people feel respected, included, and supported.

This month is a reminder that every person experiences the world differently, and that difference deserves compassion, dignity, and acceptance. We all have a role in building a community where autistic individuals and their families feel seen, welcomed, and valued.

We have Adult Autism Support groups - sign up for an upcoming group here: https://namiswwa.org/support-groups/connection/

Stress, anxiety, and emotional strain do not stay at home when the workday begins. Many people carry invisible burdens into meetings, customer interactions, and everyday responsibilities, which is why workplaces need more understanding, more compassion, and less stigma around mental health.

our SEE ME and CALM presentations help businesses better understand mental health, crisis response, de-escalation, and the impact of stigma. CALM is designed to give staff compassionate, practical tools for responding when someone is in distress, while creating space for questions, conversation, and deeper understanding.

Take a moment today to check in with yourself, not just how much you got done, but how you are really doing. Stress, burnout, anxiety, and emotional exhaustion can build quietly, and many of us get so used to carrying it that we stop noticing how heavy it has become.

You do not need to wait until you are overwhelmed to give yourself care and attention. A simple pause, an honest moment, or reaching out for support can matter more than you think. Your mental health deserves care too.

NAMIWalks is about more than putting one foot in front of the other.

It is about showing up for people living with mental health challenges and for the families, friends, and communities who walk beside them every day.

At NAMI Southwest Washington, we believe no one should face mental illness alone.

That’s why we’re inviting you to join us for NAMIWalks 2026.

Talking openly about mental illness matters. When we treat mental health as a real health issue, not a personal failing, we make more room for compassion, support, and healing. That shift can help survivors feel seen, respected, and less alone.

Stigma keeps too many people silent. Honest conversations can help change that. When we choose understanding over judgment, we help build a community where people feel safer reaching out and getting the support they deserve.

Asking for help can feel hard, especially when you have been carrying a lot for a long time. This reminder from Isabella says something so important, reaching out is not giving up. It is a powerful choice to keep moving forward, even when things feel heavy.

If you have been struggling, you do not have to go through it alone. Support can look like opening up to someone you trust, joining a support group, or taking one small step toward care. That step matters, and so do you.

During National Volunteer Week, we want to take a moment to thank the people who give their time, energy, and heart to support mental health in our community. Volunteers help create spaces where people feel seen, welcomed, and less alone, and that kind of care makes a real difference.

To every person who has shown up, helped out, shared their time, or supported our mission, thank you. Your compassion helps us reach more people with hope, connection, and support. We are grateful for all you do.

Please help us give a warm welcome to Chris Schwab, our new Program Manager, and Layla Schwab, our Office Dog and Wellness Ambassador, here at NAMI Southwest Washington.

Chris brings nine years of peer support experience, along with personal lived experience and a deep passion for mental health. He has supported members of the houseless community, youth, young adults, and people navigating both current and past addiction.

Chris has also been part of the NAMI community for years, volunteering off and on since 2016 through peer-to-peer groups, NAMIWalks, dinner events, holiday events, and autism outreach. We are grateful to have someone on our team who believes so deeply in person-first language, equity, and meeting people with compassion and respect.

Taking care of your mental health does not change who you are, it helps you reconnect with yourself. David’s story is a reminder that mental health challenges do not define a person, and that support, honesty, and small daily choices can create real change over time.

You do not have to wait until everything feels unmanageable to care for your mental health. Reaching out, setting boundaries, resting, or asking for support can be life-changing steps. Your struggles are not your identity, and your well-being matters now.
