GREAT AMERICAN SMOKEOUT

Kicking the to***co habit offers other rewards that you’ll notice right away and some that will show up over time.

Right away you’ll save the money you would have spent on to***co. You may also notice these benefits:

Food tastes better.
Your sense of smell returns to normal.
Your breath, hair, and clothes smell better.
Your teeth and fingernails stop yellowing.
Ordinary activities (like climbing stairs or light housework) leave you less out of breath.
You can be in smoke-free buildings without having to go outside to smoke.

These are just a few of the health benefits of quitting smoking, but there are others, too.Quitting smoking lowers your ...

These are just a few of the health benefits of quitting smoking, but there are others, too.

Quitting smoking lowers your risk of other cancers over time, including cancers of the stomach, liver, cervix, colon, and re**um as well as acute myeloid leukemia (AML).

Quitting also lowers your risk of heart and lung problems such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), lung infections, and circulation around your heart and other body parts.

People who quit smoking can also add as much as 10 years to their life, compared to people who continue to smoke.

Quitting while you're younger can reduce your health risks more (for example, quitting before the age of 40 reduces the risk of dying from smoking-related disease by about 90%). But quitting at any age can give back years of life that would be lost by continuing to smoke.

Our Director of Public Health and Home Visiting programs shared valuable information at The Rotary Club of Vandalia. Thanks Allison!

The Vandalia Rotary Club met on Tuesday, November 4, with Rotarian Jacob Hill introducing guest speaker Allison Satterthwaite, Director of Public Health for the Fayette County Health Department.

Satterthwaite shared an overview of several programs operated through the department, focusing on home visiting, early childhood development, and community health initiatives. She oversees the Healthy Families Initiative (HFI), which supports families with young children by promoting bonding, preventing child abuse and neglect, and partnering with DCFS when needed. The program serves children from birth to age three, and in some cases up to age five, offering home visits, parent support groups, and family engagement activities.

She also discussed the department’s doula program, which provides education and support for expectant and new mothers, and emphasized the importance of safe sleep practices to reduce infant mortality.

In addition to these family services, the health department conducts hearing and vision screenings for children throughout Fayette County schools, as well as to***co education programs that address va**ng and peer pressure among students. Satterthwaite noted an increase in the number of children needing glasses and said screen time and technology use may be contributing factors.

The department also offers affordable lab testing, lead screening, and community outreach aimed at keeping residents healthy and informed.

Satterthwaite encouraged Rotarians to spread the word about the available programs and to refer families who could benefit from them.
