Who volunteers for Hearing the Call? Of course, there are many generous audiologists who travel from the U.S. to help hundreds of hearing impaired individuals across the world. But there are also people who have careers outside the medical field, and they’re able to contribute in so many meaningful ways. From registration, to earmolds, to directing patients from room to room, each person who gives back is an essential part of a successful clinic.

What’s one of the biggest challenges of Hearing the Call trips? Testing children in makeshift clinics! Nevertheless, the volunteer audiologists know how to get creative and have fun while getting accurate testing to really change the path of the kids’ lives. The nonprofit tries to fit children with two devices (when needed) because it will dramatically improve their success rate in schools and in their family.

Earwax cleaning can be the most popular station in a Hearing the Call clinic depending on the population the nonprofit is serving. Oftentimes, communities lack access to basic hearing care and excess earwax or impacted ears can be a frequent problem. Environment and genetics can play a role in earwax production as well. Regardless, you best believe the patients leave with clean ears — a necessity for accurate testing and proper earmolds.
One of the reasons we love supporting Hearing the Call is because the organization uses best practices when helping patients even in rural and remote areas.

“Care and Use” is the final step when attending an international Hearing the Call clinic, and it’s one of the most important. By now, the patients have waited for hours, are tired, and are ready to go home… BUT, before they do, they are instructed on basic hearing aid maintenance. Adult patients and parents of children are shown how to replace batteries, clean the devices, and given contact information for local support. This will hold them over until the nonprofit’s next visit the following year.
As a member of Hearing the Call, we know how important continuous support is in the ultimate vision of creating sustainable hearing care in countries that need it the most.

Exostosis, also known as ‘surfer’s ear,’ is the abnormal growth of bone in the ear canal which is often caused by repeated exposure to cold water or wind. This condition can lead to hearing loss and frequent ear infections.

We often call a “hearing smile” the moment a hearing aid is turned on and a patient experiences better hearing instantly. But for many patients, the opportunity to even receive care through a Hearing the Call clinic has them smiling before their day even begins. We find that the hope of hearing can be just as meaningful as the actual treatment they receive at the end of the day.

Meaningful work is happening in Jakarta, Indonesia! Hearing the Call recently had its first follow-up visit to the country which is quite literally on the other side of the world from the U.S.! Hearing aids and access to other hearing care is desperately needed. There are only 150 audiologists to serve the highly populous area of over 280 million people. Hearing aids provide what we call “instant relief” to impairment, but there is still much work to be done to build a sustainable clinic for continuous care.

We’re proud to support and see Hearing the Call grow!

Even though motorboats are used on open bodies of water, their engines can still cause significant noise depending on the motor type. When driving or riding in a boat be mindful of all of the sounds, not just the music coming through the speakers!
