Feeding is one of the earliest and most vital skills an infant develops, intertwining nourishment, growth, and connection. As a pediatric occupational therapist specializing in infant feeding, I work to address the complex interplay of oral motor, sensory, and coordination challenges that can interfere with an infant’s ability to feed effectively.
While lactation consultants provide essential support for breastfeeding families, their focus is on maternal-infant dynamics and positioning. They do not typically evaluate or treat underlying oral motor issues, such as tongue or lip ties, suck-swallow-breathe dysfunction, or weak oral musculature. My role as an OT complements their efforts by addressing these foundational issues to ensure the feeding process is functional and sustainable for both the infant and the mother.
