When we feel overwhelmed, saddened and helpless by the devastation around us, we need practices to help us center.
Yoga is not neutral. At its heart, yoga carries a commitment to the wellbeing of all living beings—to dignity, non-harm, truth, and collective care.
What is happening in our nation didn’t arise overnight, and it won’t be resolved quickly. It will take time, repair, accountability, and deep healing—both personally and collectively.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, scared, angry, or exhausted by recent events, start here:
Create a sense of safety in your body. Safety is not denial. Regulation is not complacency.
A settled nervous system gives us the capacity to stay engaged without burning out or turning on one another.
Try this mantra with your breath:
In this moment, I am safe enough to breathe. I am allowed to soften without surrendering my values.
And this metta (loving-kindness) mantra which isn’t bypassing. It’s regulation so we don’t become what we’re resisting.
May all people of all colors,
all nations and all states,
be safe.
May they be free from harm.
May they be held in dignity.
May we remember our shared humanity—
and have the courage to protect it.
This is yoga as practice.
This is healing as preparation.
This is how we stay human while doing hard things.
