In the spirit of Oriental Medicine, a primary goal of Mariryan Heschmeyer, D.O.M. is to provide her patients with a broader understanding of health and more lasting sense of well-being. Instead of the traditional disease-centered focus of conventional medicine, TCM applies a patient-centered approach that addresses the whole person rather than simply his symptoms. We combine the discipline of modern science with the wisdom of ancient healing and take advantage of the knowledge of several disciplines. What this means is that patient and provider work together to develop an integrated diagnostic and therapeutic plan that will best address the whole patient. Mariryan Heschmeyer graduated from the University of Florida with a Bachelors of Science in 2000. She continued her education at Dragon Rises College of Oriental Medicine, graduating in the top of her class in 2005 receiving a Doctorate in Oriental Medicine, D.O.M. She accepted an appointment in Atlanta shortly after graduating to treat top professional athletes in the area. Mariryan is nationally board certified in Acupuncture, Chinese Herbology and Biomedicine. Her practice emphasizes in Family medicine while specializing in infertility, helping more than 120 women conceive while also managing them succesfully throughout their pregnancy. She has a successful practice in Albany, GA and has recently opened, in both Venice and St. Petersburg.

I take my patients off of Tumeric all the time.

Although tumeric (active ingredient curcumin) is great at reducing inflammation it needs to be BALANCED. The herb itself is HOT in nature (yang) and when not balanced it sets off a series of negative events in the body.
Good news is, TCM has known this for 1000s of years and there are balanced herbal prescriptions with curcumin in them. 👏

Katie Mohan started taking daily turmeric pills in March after seeing a doctor on Instagram tout its benefits for inflammation and joint pain relief. A few weeks later, the 57-year-old started having stomach pain, nausea and fatigue.

“I just did not feel well generally,” she said. “I also noticed that despite drinking a lot of water every day, that my urine was darker.”

Mohan didn’t link her symptoms to the herbal pills until she saw an NBC News report in May about rising liver damage from supplements. She recognized her symptoms in a patient taking the same high dose of turmeric.

Within a week, Mohan went to urgent care, where tests showed her liver enzymes were 70 times the normal level.

“It was very serious,” said Dr. Nikolaos Pyrsopoulos, a hepatologist at NYU. “Katie actually was one step before full liver damage, liver failure, requiring liver transplant.”
