The 2021 Atlantic hurricane season was the third-most active Atlantic hurricane season on record, producing 21 named storms.

Are you leaving soon for the summer? Here's a generic checklist to get you started in preparing your home for departure.

GENERIC DEPARTURE CHECKLIST

• Have AC equipment maintenanced prior to departure.
• Dispose of all garbage, recycling, food items, etc.
• Don't store any paper or plastic bags inside home or garage.
• Turn off water heater, washer, dryer at electric panel.
• Turn off water to house.
• Store outdoor furniture and decorations inside.
• Lock all windows and doors.
• Unplug computers and printers.
• Clean all counters, and vacuum and mop all floors.
• Adjust thermostat to between 77 and 79 degrees.
• Turn off ice maker.
• Plug all drains and close all toilet seat lids.

We are originally from New England and we miss a long weekend drive during peak foliage season, leaf peeping and apple picking. We asked some of our clients to send us photos of the colors they are seeing and my goodness, they graciously responded with photos and stories from places like Ohio, Michigan, Central Park - NYC, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and London, England. We like to say that “we take care of people and their things”. With this request, our clients took care of us. They are simply the best.

The last of our seasonal residents have made their way back to paradise and wow, what a summer it was! What can go wrong, did go wrong. Check out this list of issues we managed for our client’s property while they were away:

2 homes with roof leaks
1 home with a pool leak
1 home with no AC.
1 garage door broken by a friend of the homeowner
1 home with a pest invasion
1 home with security alarm set off
1 home with broken sprinkler head under soffit, causing water damage inside home

Looks like a roof leak caused this water bubble, but upon further inspection, we found an irrigation sprinkler, right next to the home, that broke and shot LOTS of water, like a geyser into the soffit, and down the inside of the wall, causing this mess. We capped off the sprinkler for now and this wall only needs minimal repair. If it's not one thing, it's another. Don't leave things to chance. Hope is not a strategy.
