It appears Texas is beginning to re-enter fire season. During the 2024 Smokehouse Creek Fire, Western Fire Resources fought fire in and around Canadian. After 2 days of firefighting, and saving at least 2 homes and 1 dog, we were instructed to stand down by Texas A&M Forest Service. The reason was a minor technicality in the way contracted resources can be compensated.
Texas A&M Forest Service has a no-interest 2-year loan to fund the use of Federally-contrected firefighting aircraft in between Legislative sessions. The fix is to simply amend this agreement to include ground resources as well.
In April 2024, we provided testimony at the Smokehouse Creek Fire Congressional Hearing as to how to fix this and make contracted wildland fire services available locally and throughout the state. Though the fix would have further encouraged private-sector investment in wildfire response, ultimately saving taxpayer money, and more importantly greatly increasing available initial attack capacity statewide, the Legislature failed to address this during the recent main and special sessions.
As a result, 3 engines, 1 water tender, 4 dozers, and 1 road grader that would otherwise be available for local response in and around Canadian, Texas, or statewide, will once again be stood down and not allowed to engage wildfires.
The solution to our wildfire problem is to involve all resources. We can no longer rely only on government alone.
