📀 WHOA - Ever get dizzy or feel like you’re spinning? Could be Vertigo.

➡️ What is Vertigo?

Vertigo is a sensation of everything around you spinning or whirling around you. This dizziness can be triggered by certain movements It's often caused by an inner ear issue, such as a disturbance in the balance mechanism.

🌪️ Vertigo is not a disease, rather it is a symptom of varying conditions. It can be triggered by various factors like chronic illness, inner ear infections, head injuries, migraines or even certain medications.

🌪️ While Vertigo is not usually a serious condition in itself, it can be debilitating and affect your quality of life.

🌪️ On average, Vertigo attacks last several minutes, however they can last as long as days, or even months.

🌪️ Vertigo is more prevalent in older adults, but it can affect people of all ages. It is very common and nearly 40% of Americans experience it at once in their lifetime.

🏃🏽‍♂️ Staying active is KEY for better living with Parkinson's!

Exercise & physical activity can improve many motor and non-motor Parkinson’s symptoms.

The Parkinson's Foundation & the American College of Sports Medicine developed the following exercise recommendations & guidelines for safety + effectiveness for those living with Parkinson’s disease (PD):

👉 Aerobic Activity
3 days/week for at least 30 mins/session of continuous or intermittent at moderate to vigorous intensity. 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise/week.

Types of activities: Continuous, rhythmic activities such as brisk walking, running, cycling, swimming, aerobics class.

Safety considerations: Risks of freezing of gait, low blood pressure, blunted heart rate response. Supervision may be required.

👉 Balance, Agility & Multitasking
2-3 days/week. Daily integration if possible.

Activities: Multi-directional stepping, weight shifting, dynamic balance activities, large movements, multitasking such as yoga, tai chi, dance, boxing.

Safety considerations: Concerns w/ cognitive & balance problems. Supervision may be required.

👉 Strength Training
2-3 non-consecutive days/ week for at least 30 mins per session of 10-15 reps for major muscle groups; resistance, speed or power focus.

Activities: Major muscle groups of upper/lower extremities such as using weight machines, resistance bands, light/moderate handheld weights or body weight.

Safety considerations: Muscle stiffness or postural instability may hinder full range of motion.

👉 Stretching
2-3 days/week. Daily is most effective.

Activities: Sustained stretching with deep breathing or dynamic stretching before exercise.

Safety considerations: May require adaptations for flexed posture, osteoporosis and pain.

➡️ Seeing a physical therapist specializing in PD for full functional evaluation is also recommended.

🌱 Practicing Yoga helps you meet the moment

Yoga involves combinations of physical postures and mindful breathing which promote physical health & overall well-being.

➡️ Yoga poses, or asanas, support active presence and offer a variety of physical, mental and emotional benefits, including:

♾️ Body Awareness
Holding poses encourages a heightened awareness of your body and its alignment, which can help you understand your body's capabilities, limitation, and areas that may need attention.

♾️ Enhanced Balance & Stability
Balancing poses requires concentration & engagement of stabilizing muscles, enhancing overall balance and stability.

♾️ Joint Health
The gentle stretching involved in holding poses can contribute to joint health by improving flexibility and reducing stiffness.

♾️ Strength Building
Many poses require you to support your body weight in different ways, helping to build and tone muscles, especially beneficial for the core, legs, arms and back.

♾️ Improved Flexibility
Holding yoga poses allows your muscles to lengthen and stretch, promoting increased flexibility, which can improve range of motion & reduce the risk of injuries.

♾️ Posture Improvement
Many yoga poses promote proper alignment and posture, which can contribute to better spinal health with regular practice.

♾️ Increased Patience & Endurance
Holding yoga poses requires patience & mental endurance. Developing these qualities on the mat can translate into improved patience & resilience in everyday life.

♾️ Mind-Body Connection
Holding poses provides an opportunity to focus on the present moment, cultivating mindfulness & concentration, strengthening connection between mind & body.

♾️ Emotional Well-being
The body & breath awareness cultivated in holding poses allows you to experience and process emotions that may arise during your practice, which can benefit emotional well-being.

➡️ The FUNctional Yoga class, offered at the NeuroPerformance Gym at Equilibrium Physical Therapy, incorporates the fundamental principles of alignment & fluid movement, all linked together by the breath. Pose modifications are shown for all fitness levels. Call us to sign-up: 📞 805-339-9718

✨ Meet the day with all you have! Sleep is more key than you may think.

Prioritizing regular, quality sleep– including naps, allowing time for relaxation, and getting the full night’s sleep you need– is essential for good health + overall well-being.

Sleep is crucial in supporting recovery, immune function, energy restoration, cognitive function, hormonal balance, and various other physiological processes.

🔅 Immune Function
Rest is vital for a healthy immune system. During deep sleep, the immune system releases cytokines, proteins that help regulate immune responses and fight infections. Consistent, quality sleep helps strengthen the immune system's ability to defend against illnesses.

🔅 Recovery & Repair
During rest, especially during sleep, the body undergoes repair & maintenance processes such as cellular & tissue repair and the release of growth hormones. These processes help to heal & regenerate tissues, supporting overall recovery from daily wear & tear.

🔅 Stress Reduction
Rest allows the body to recover from stressors & helps regulate the production of stress hormones like cortisol. Chronic stress can have detrimental effects on physical health, so adequate rest is essential for managing stress and preventing its negative impacts.

🔅 Muscle Recovery
After physical activities or workouts, muscles need time to recover. Rest allows muscle fibers to repair & rebuild, vital for muscle growth, strength development, and preventing injuries.

🔅 Cognitive Function
Adequate rest, especially sleep, is crucial in supporting memory, problem-solving abilities, creativity, mental clarity and overall cognitive function .

🔅 Heart Health
Chronic sleep deprivation has been linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases, including hypertension and heart disease. Restorative sleep supports heart health by helping to regulate blood pressure & reduce inflammation.

🔅 Cellular Health & Aging
Rest allows cells to repair DNA damage & maintain functionality. Poor sleep & insufficient rest can accelerate cellular aging, which can contribute to age-related health issues.

Prioritize sleep & prioritize your well-being ✨

💚 Taking time for pause = giving time for you. Give yourself what you need to support your mind-body balance.

➡️ What is Mind-Body Balance?

Mind-body balance refers to integration & harmony between mind, body and spirit.

Cultivating mind-body balance promotes holistic well-being, resilience, vitality and a deeper sense of fulfillment in all aspects of life.

Mind-body practices encompass a wide range of techniques & activities that promote health, well-being, and inner harmony by recognizing the interplay between mental, emotional and physical states, aiming to cultivate balance, self-awareness and resilience.

➡️ Some common mind-body practices include:

💚 Mindful Breathing
Practicing mindful breathing involves attention to the breath, awareness when attention wanders and repeatedly bringing it back into presence. This cultivates a connection between the mind & body by reducing physical and mental stress, and improving mental clarity.

💚 Yoga
Yoga combines physical postures and mindful breathing to improve flexibility, strength and balance while easing the mind and reducing stress.

💚 Tai Chi
Tai Chi is characterized by slow, flowing movements with mindful breathing. It promotes relaxation, balance, and coordination while enhancing energy flow throughout the body. Therapeutic benefits include stress reduction and improved physical & mental well-being.

💚 Connecting with Nature
Spending time with nature, whether through taking a walk or hike, gardening or simply being outdoors, helps to ground in the present moment, stimulating the senses and promoting a sense of interconnectedness. This improves mood, opens up creativity & enhances well-being.

💚 Quality Sleep
Prioritizing sleep supports physical health, mental clarity and emotional well-being. Allowing the body to rest and restore facilitates optimal functioning of the mind & body by improving cognitive function, enhancing mood regulation, and better regulating emotions.

Integrating mind-body practices into daily routines can enhance physical, mental and emotional health while fostering a deeper connection with yourself and the world you are navigating.
