Flashbacks don’t mean you’re weak.
They don’t mean you’re dramatic.
And they sure as hell don’t mean you should be “over it” by now.

Flashbacks happen when your brain decides survival matters more than comfort.

They don’t ask permission.
They don’t care if it’s been years.
They don’t care if your life looks stable on the outside.

They hit your nervous system like danger is happening RIGHT NOW.

That can look like panic out of nowhere.
Rage that feels bigger than the moment.
Shutting down and going numb.
Feeling disconnected from your body.
Feeling like you’re back somewhere you fought hard to leave.

Most people were taught that reactions like this mean something is wrong with them.

Here’s the truth:

Your brain built survival wiring to keep you alive.

It learned fast.
It learned under pressure.
And it held onto those patterns because at one point… they worked.

Healing isn’t about shaming those survival responses.

Healing is teaching your brain and body that you don’t have to live in survival mode anymore.

That takes time.
That takes safety.
That takes support.

And if your reactions sometimes feel intense or confusing — you are not broken.

You’re carrying survival stories in your nervous system.

And those stories can be rewritten.

Today is National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day.

At Strong Self Psychotherapy, I work with people who run toward danger while everyone else runs away.

Law enforcement officers carry a weight most people will never see:
   •   constant hypervigilance
   •   moral injury
   •   cumulative trauma
   •   a nervous system that never fully stands down

You’re expected to stay composed in chaos, make split-second decisions with lifelong consequences, and then go home and act like nothing happened.

That takes a toll.

Appreciation isn’t just saying “thank you.”
It’s recognizing that trauma exposure is real.
It’s acknowledging that strength doesn’t mean silence.
It’s making room for support without shame.

To those who serve:
You are allowed to be human.
You are allowed to struggle.
And you deserve care that understands the reality of your work.

Today—and every day—I honor the complexity, courage, and cost of the job. And I thank you for your service.

Trying harder isn’t the same as getting better.

Avoiding doesn’t make it go away.

A lot of people are exhausted not because they aren’t trying—but because they’ve been carrying too much for too long without support.

Burnout, anxiety, irritability, shutdown… these aren’t personal failures. They’re signs your system is overwhelmed.

You’re human. Not broken.

And you don’t have to do this alone.

As we step into a new year, I want to say this plainly:
If you’ve been struggling…
If you’ve been holding it together but barely…
If you’ve been thinking about therapy for months (or years) and keep talking yourself out of it…
This is your invitation.
New years aren’t about becoming a new person.
They’re about making new choices.
New habits.
New ways of taking care of yourself instead of white-knuckling through life.
Starting therapy doesn’t mean you’re broken.
It means you’re paying attention.
It means you’re tired of carrying everything alone.
It means you’re ready to understand yourself instead of just surviving yourself.
You don’t need to have the “right” words.
You don’t need to be in crisis.
You don’t need to justify why it hurts.
If something in you keeps whispering maybe it’s time, listen to that.
If you’ve been struggling and wondering whether to reach out—this is me telling you: you can.
I’m here.
And help doesn’t have to wait until things fall apart.
New year. New choices.
You don’t have to do this alone.

If this hit you, you’re not alone. Link in bio or use QR code.
