The Veterans Home of California - Ventura had a fantastic time visiting the Ventura County Fair yesterday!

We indulged in delicious food, participated in exciting activities, and enjoyed seeing several local Future Farmers of America chapters showcasing their impressive farm animals. One of the highlights of the day was the pig race. Our veterans love our community, and we are all so grateful to live in such a beautiful place as Ventura County, California!

The month of June has been a memorable one at the Veterans Home of California - Ventura. It’s with a heavy heart that we said goodbye to our friend, Shadowdancer. We’ll miss him, but we’ve been making the most of our time together, just like he would have wanted.

On June 12, we celebrated Women Veterans Day by giving out handmade cards to our amazing women veterans—a small but meaningful way to say thanks for their bravery and service.

We also had a fantastic visit with American Legion Post 741 in Camarillo. Their stories and laughter brought so much joy to everyone.

Last week, we turned our main dining hall into a fun casino night with blackjack, roulette, and great company. It was a wonderful time filled with laughter and good vibes.

We can’t thank all the veterans, volunteers, families, and staff enough for making these moments happen. Here’s to many more great memories in the month of July and an early Happy Birthday to the United States of America!

Yesterday, the Veterans Home of California - Ventura gathered with heavy hearts to remember and celebrate the life of Mr. Ricardo Melendez, known to his community as Shadowdancer—a proud veteran of the United States Air Force, a beloved Chumash elder, and a ninth-generation Californian. As a descendant of thirteen generations of California Spanish and Mexican ancestry, he embodied the spirit of the Chumash, Tamien Ohlone, Yocut, and Salinan peoples with grace and strength.

As a medic on C-9 aeromedical evacuation flights, Shadowdancer's commitment to healing others continued long after his military service. At the Veterans Home, he generously offered his heart, time, and wisdom to uplift fellow residents through advocacy, volunteer work, and mentorship.

Shadowdancer's greatest joy was his family, especially his daughter, Cori (Jeremy), and his beloved grandson, Iverson. He shared a lifelong bond of friendship and love with LeAnn, the mother of his child and his dearest companion throughout the years.

He had a deep love for his siblings: Roy (Irma), Marta, Mariza (Kevin), and Marlena (Scott). He took great pride in the many cherished Tíos, Tías, primos, nieces, nephews, and their children who made up his extended family. To many, he was affectionately known as Tío Rick, a role he embraced with joy and devotion.

Family was everything to him, and his gentle presence, steady support, and boundless warmth will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Shadowdancer's courage, kindness, and cultural legacy will never be forgotten. His memory lives on in every life he touched.

Thank you, Shadowdancer, for your service, your spirit, and your love.

It’s hard not to smile when Elvis comes to town!

Yesterday, the Veterans Home of California - Ventura hosted a fantastic celebration for our residents with May birthdays. We were thrilled to have professional Elvis impersonator Danny Memphis Entertainment Page join us for the festivities!

Everyone, from our birthday stars to our wonderful volunteers, had a blast. They sang along to classic hits like “All Shook Up” and “Kentucky Rain,” creating an atmosphere we're going to remember for a long time.

Join us in sending warm wishes to our May birthday residents for many more amazing years ahead!

P.S. - If you listen close, you might hear Danny performing a song by another famous artist. Does anyone recognize the artist/tune?

Today is National Nurses Day, marking the start of a weeklong celebration honoring the essential contributions that nurses make to our society. This special day coincides with Public Service Recognition Week, a time dedicated to recognizing and appreciating all of our dedicated public servants.
