The Language Access & Interpreter Services Department at Ventura County Medical Center (VCMC) and Santa Paula Hospital is strengthening the quality of care for individuals facing language barriers. In 2024, the Health Care Foundation for Ventura County (HCFVC) was awarded funding from the California Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development (GO-Biz) to expand language access across Ventura County.

This newly established department is led by Jorge Mejia, Director of Language Access and Interpreter Services, alongside Interpreters Maribel Rojas and Heriberta Gomez. The team provides Spanish and Mixteco interpretation in person, by phone, and via video, ensuring patients receive clear and compassionate communication in their preferred language. To date, they have translated more than 40 patient documents into Spanish.

In July, Jorge and his team launched a 40-hour, in-person interpreter training program. The first cohort has since earned certification, equipping local professionals to deliver culturally competent interpretation across medical, educational, government, and nonprofit settings. A second cohort will begin training this month.

A special thank you to the California Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development (GO-Biz) for supporting the growth of Language Access and Interpreter Services in Ventura County, improving communication and care for patients countywide.

This October, Health Care Foundation for Ventura County is pleased to recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an annual global effort to raise awareness and encourage regular screening for the early detection of breast cancer. One in eight women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime, making it the second leading cause of cancer-related death among women. Fortunately, thanks to advances in screening, detection, and treatment, over 3.5 million breast cancer survivors are alive today.

Earlier this year, HCFVC was awarded a $2 million RISE grant from Gold Coast Health Plan. This transformative investment will enable the Ventura County Medical Center Breast Health Center to enhance and expand its services, improving access to high-quality breast health care for patients throughout Ventura County.

To schedule your mammogram at Ventura County Medical Center, (VCMC) please call 805-652-6080 and press 1.

This September, Health Care Foundation for Ventura County (HCFVC) is pleased to recognize NICU Awareness Month. We honor the incredible strength of Neonatal Intensive Care Unit babies, the resilience of their families, and the dedication of the healthcare professionals who provide critical care both in Ventura County and beyond. Ventura County Medical Center is home to a Level III NICU, offering advanced, around-the-clock care for our community’s most vulnerable newborns.

Swipe to read a story from Kiara and Baby Kaia, a local family whose 91-day journey at VCMC’s NICU reflects the impact of expert medical care, compassionate support, and the hope it provides families during their most challenging moments.
A heartfelt thank-you to Kiara Barry and her husband, Sean, for graciously sharing their story with us.

Health Care Foundation for Ventura County (HCFVC) is pleased to recognize Fall Prevention Month this September alongside Ventura County Medical Center Trauma Department and Ventura County Area Agency on Aging. To mark the occasion, HCFVC donated more than 100 gait belts to the Ventura County Fire Department.

Firefighters often respond to fall-related emergencies, and these gait belts will be provided to community members who need assistance. A gait belt is a simple but essential tool that allows caregivers to safely help a loved one after a fall, reducing the risk of further injury and ensuring safer transfers.

HCFVC CEO Amy Towner, Ventura County Fire Department leadership, and Ventura County Medical Center Trauma Department staff came together to celebrate this important donation and partnership in support of community health and safety.

This gift was made possible through the generosity of the Hanger Foundation, whose commitment to advancing safety and quality health care in Ventura County makes a lasting difference. We are deeply grateful for their support in helping protect Ventura County.
