Love seeing this piece of local history shine! ✨
The City of Vermillion recently finished a project to repair and restore the cupola and skylight of the historic Carnegie library, which was built for the city in 1903 and dedicated July 1904. The cupola project was supported with an award from our SDSHS Deadwood Fund Grant program.
The Carnegie library building was designed by Sioux Falls architect Joseph Schwarz. The municipal library moved to new quarters in the 1970s. This building was listed individually in the National Register of Historic Places in 1983, and included also as part of the Downtown Vermillion Historic District when it was listed in the National Register in 2003.
(A few years after this one, another library built with Carnegie funding and designed by Schwarz was added to USD's campus in Vermillion. It is now used by the National Music Museum.)
