Biomedical and Translational Sciences

Biomedical and Translational Sciences This page is for the University of South Dakota Division of Biomedical and Translational Sciences Graduate Program.

The Division of Basic Biomedical Sciences at the Sanford School of Medicine is the home to faculty with a wide breadth of research and teaching interests. Our faculty create an environment of innovative, collaborative and interdisciplinary research aimed at examining mechanisms contributing to human disease. By using this mechanistic approach, our faculty hope to develop novel approaches for the d

iagnosis, management and treatment of disease processes. In addition, our faculty engage in the education of undergraduate, graduate and medical students, both in the classroom and in the research laboratory. We create a unique learning environment to help our students understand the complexity of the human organism, and then translate this into diagnostic and therapeutic development. It is through discovery, education and service that the faculty in the Division of Basic Biomedical Sciences become leaders in their areas of scholarship.

Congratulations to Dr. Xuejun Wang!

He received the Carl J. Wiggers Award from the American Physiological Society (APS) during the American Physiological Summit held in Minneapolis, MN, earlier this month (April 23-26, 2026). As this year's awardee, he gave the Invited Wiggers Lecture entitled "Cardiac Protein Quality Control and Proteotoxicity" at the Summit on April 25.

"The Carl J. Wiggers award is presented to a scientist who is a Fellow of the APS CV Section and has made outstanding contributions to cardiovascular research throughout their career, has been an active and committed member of the section, and who will attract outstanding new members to the section from the U.S. and abroad."

"The Carl J. Wiggers Award honors the American Physiological Society (APS) Cardiovascular (CV) Section's founder Carl J. Wiggers, MD, whose research defined fundamental pressure-flow relationships in the cardiovascular system. In addition to publishing definitive texts in circulatory physiology, Wiggers founded the journal Circulation Research and trained numerous future department heads and several APS presidents. "
