Our graduates are dedicated to life-long learning and improving the health of the communities they serve. We admit 32 students each year who meet our academic standards. We not only stay on top of the latest teaching techniques, but we keep current on the latest clinical practices as well. Our students are well prepared with an above average national certification exam pass rate - 99.8 percent sin

ce 2004. They enjoy a low faculty-to student ratio and get to experience clinical training opportunities in the real world. We offer services at several clinical sites throughout the state. This helps our community as well as our students by providing clinical experience. These include:

Main clinical site on the Vermillion campus, Delta Dental Oral Health Center
Clinic in Siouxland Health and Human Services Building in Sioux Falls. Correctional Facilities in Yankton, Springfield and Sioux Falls
South Dakota Developmental Center
IHS/Tribal Dental Clinics
Area nursing homes
Area Schools

Our students get experience outside the classroom for professional development and clinical experience, including:

Providing public dental health services
Providing oral cancer screenings
Giving oral health presentations
Completing a three-week dental office internship.

USD Dental Hygiene held Give Kids a Smile 2025 on February 22 at the Delta Dental Oral Health Center in Vermillion. This event provides exams, cleanings, sealants, and more to uninsured or underinsured children aged 0-17 residing in Clay County, South Dakota.

These senior dental hygiene students recently rolled up their sleeves and served at the Welcome Table at Vermillion's Community Connection Center! 🎉 They handed out free toothbrushes, toothpaste, and invaluable oral health instructions to brighten the smiles of our community members.
With graduation just a few weeks away, we are so proud of their hard work, dedication, and compassion. 💙 Here's to hoping that this experience inspires a lifelong passion for service in the communities where they will live and work.

This experience can be nerve-wracking—as both clinician and patient—but they faced it with positivity, skill, and determination. This week they proved just how capable, competent, and empowered they are! 🦷💪
Their smiles might be a little lopsided thanks to the anesthetic (😉), but they still managed to enjoy an ice cream treat to celebrate their hard work and dedication. 🍦👏
