Orthopedic Tip- Arthritis: This can occur in any joint throughout the body. Life altering arthritis can take over shoulders, hips, and knees. The most common symptoms with arthritis are pain, stiffness, sensation of instability, swelling, catching, and grinding of the joint. Today, there still is no CURE for arthritis. We do have non-surgical and surgical means that are very effective at treating it. Non-surgical treatment includes: weight loss (if a hip or knee, as this greatly reduces the joint reactive forces that are transmitted across these joints), anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs), activity modifications (low impact exercises), steroid injections, visco-supplementation injections. Surgical treatments incluce hip/knee/shoulder replacement, and partial knee replacement. Joint replacement surgery has greatly improved over the past 10 years and can improve the quality of life for patients with arthritic joints.
