🦷Dental Disease in Pets: What Every Owner Should Know 🦷

At Altitude Veterinary Services, we’re passionate about helping your pets live longer, healthier lives—and that starts with their oral health!

Did you know?
By age 3, most dogs and cats have some form of dental disease. It often starts small but can quickly progress if left untreated.

The Stages of Dental Disease:
🔹 Stage 1: Gingivitis – Red, inflamed gums and plaque buildup
🔹 Stage 2: Advanced Gingivitis – Tartar accumulation and bad breath
🔹 Stage 3: Periodontitis – Infection begins damaging bone and tissues
🔹 Stage 4: Advanced Periodontitis – Severe pain, tooth loss, and systemic risk

Why it matters:
Dental disease isn’t just about the mouth—it can impact your pet’s entire body. Bacteria can enter the bloodstream and affect the heart, liver, and kidneys, leading to serious health issues.

Signs your pet may have dental disease:
• Bad breath
• Yellow/brown tartar buildup
• Red or bleeding gums
• Difficulty eating or chewing
• Pawing at the mouth

How to protect your pet:
✔️ Brush your pet’s teeth regularly
✔️ Use vet-approved dental chews or diets
✔️ Schedule routine dental exams & cleanings
✔️ Start early—prevention is key!

Healthy teeth = a healthier, happier pet 🐶🐱

Spay & Neuter Your Pet: One of the Most Important Decisions You’ll Make for Their Health

Did you know spaying or neutering your pet can significantly reduce the risk of serious health problems and help them live a longer, healthier life?

✨ Why it matters:
✔ Lowers risk of certain cancers (mammary, uterine, testicular)
✔ Prevents life-threatening infections like pyometra
✔ Reduces unwanted behaviors like roaming, marking, and aggression
✔ Helps prevent accidental litters and pet overpopulation

⚠️ What can happen if pets aren’t spayed or neutered:
- Higher risk of serious reproductive diseases
- Increased chance of running away or getting injured
- Behavioral challenges that can be stressful for both pets and owners
- Unplanned litters contributing to overcrowded shelters

📅 When should it be done?
🐶 Dogs: Typically 6 months for small breeds, and 9–18 months for larger breeds (depending on growth and breed)
🐱 Cats: Around 4–6 months old
🐰 Rabbits: Often recommended around 4–6 months old to prevent reproductive cancers and improve behavior

💬 Every pet is different—our team can help you choose the safest timing based on breed, size, and lifestyle.

📞 Spots fill quickly for spay/neuter consultations!

🚨Public Health Alert: Kennel Cough & Upper Respiratory Infections on the Rise🚨

We are currently seeing an increase in cases of kennel cough and upper respiratory infections in pets throughout the Basin. We want to help keep your animals healthy by sharing what to watch for and how to prevent the spread.

🐶🐱 Common Signs & Symptoms:
• Persistent coughing (often a dry, “honking” cough)
• Sneezing or nasal discharge
• Runny eyes
• Lethargy or decreased energy
• Loss of appetite
• Mild fever

🛑 How to Help Prevent It:
• Keep your pets up to date on vaccinations, especially Bordetella
• Avoid close contact with unfamiliar dogs, especially in high-traffic areas (dog parks, grooming facilities, boarding)
• Practice good hygiene—wash hands after handling other animals
• Keep food/water bowls and bedding clean
• Isolate any pets showing symptoms from others in the home

🏥 What To Do If Your Pet Shows Symptoms:
• Keep them home and away from other animals
• Monitor symptoms closely
• Contact Altitude Veterinary Services for guidance—some cases may require medication
• Seek immediate care if your pet has difficulty breathing, stops eating, or becomes very lethargic

Most cases are mild, but kennel cough is highly contagious, so early action is key to protecting your pet and others.

🌷🐣 Spring has arrived in Vernal! 🐶🐱🌼
With the season comes new life—and it’s the perfect time to make sure your pets are up to date on their annual exams, vaccinations, and preventative care 🩺💉

---

🐶 Dogs
Vaccinations protect dogs from serious diseases like parvovirus, distemper, and rabies. These illnesses can be severe, expensive to treat, and even fatal. Staying current on vaccines is one of the best ways to keep your dog healthy and protected.

---

🐱 Cats
Cats are at risk for diseases such as feline leukemia (FeLV), calicivirus, and panleukopenia. Even indoor cats aren’t completely risk-free, making regular vaccinations essential for long-term health.

---

🦟 Heartworm & Parasite Prevention 🪱
Heartworm disease, spread by mosquitoes, can cause serious heart and lung damage. Fleas, intestinal parasites, and ticks also pose risks—not just to pets, but to humans too ❗

Common tickborne illnesses include Lyme disease, Ehrlichiosis, and Anaplasmosis—all preventable with proper care.

We offer heartworm testing and safe, reliable parasite prevention options to keep your pets protected year-round 💊🛡️

It’s also the perfect reminder to give your pets a little extra love today—whether that’s a long walk, a favorite treat, or some extra cuddle time. 🐶🐱

Don’t forget—keeping your pet happy also means keeping them healthy! Regular checkups, vaccines, and preventatives go a long way in giving them the long, healthy life they deserve.

🌷🐣 Spring is here in Vernal! 🐮🐴🌼
With warmer weather and new life all around, it’s the perfect time to focus on your livestock’s preventative care and vaccination program🩺💉

---

🐮 Cattle
Preventative care is essential for herd health. Diseases like clostridial infections and respiratory illness can spread quickly, impacting both health and productivity. A solid vaccination program helps protect your herd and keep it thriving.

---

🐴 Horses
Spring is a key time to update your horse’s vaccinations and overall care plan. Core vaccines protect against tetanus, West Nile virus, rabies, and Eastern/Western equine encephalitis.

Depending on your horse’s lifestyle, risk-based vaccines like influenza and rhinopneumonitis (EHV) may also be recommended. Routine deworming and dental care are also important for keeping your horse healthy and ready for the season.

---

🌱 Healthy animals start with prevention
We’re here to help you build a plan that keeps your animals protected all year long.
