After 40 years of dedicated service, we announce with joy and gratitude the upcoming retirement of Dr. Robert Wolff beginning September 30th.

Dr. Wolff has been an INTEGRAL part of Back In Balance, contributing years of knowledge, expertise, warmth and humor! Dr. Wolff has been more than a mentor and guide for the last 6 months for myself (Dr.Jess) and our team- he’s been a person to lean on, the first to provide a helping hand, never afraid to assist, and opened room for growth, expansion, and change.

Dr. Robert Wolff has left an enduring mark on his community and this office. While we will miss his daily presence, we are thrilled as he embarks on his new, exciting chapter- filled with well deserved rest, travel, and time with loved ones.

Getting injections for back pain? You might want to think twice.

New research suggests they're no better than placebos, despite their growing popularity and hefty price tag.

In short, injections for back pain might not be a good idea after all, according to a panel of experts who have reviewed the practice and found serious concerns regarding its effectiveness and financial motivations.

Back pain is a common global health issue, affecting millions and leading to significant disability and economic burden.

While various interventions exist, including epidural steroid injections and nerve blocks, a new study published in The BMJ reveals that these injections may be no more effective than placebos. The research team conducted a comprehensive meta-analysis of 81 trials, involving nearly 8,000 participants, and found no high-certainty evidence supporting the efficacy of these procedures in alleviating either axial or radicular pain. Despite this lack of evidence, the use of spinal injections for back pain is on the rise, raising concerns about potential ulterior motives. The study reveals a possible confirmation bias among interventionists, where those who prescribe injections are more likely to report positive outcomes in their research. Financial incentives may also play a role, as physicians performing these procedures often generate substantial revenue. The disconnect between evidence and practice raises questions about the appropriateness of these interventions and the need for a more balanced approach to chronic pain management. The researchers suggest that healthcare systems should reconsider funding these procedures and instead prioritize non-procedural treatments that have stronger evidence of effectiveness. This shift in focus would necessitate exploring alternative treatment options, such as non-invasive approaches like physical therapy, exercise, and cognitive behavioral therapy, which have shown promising results in managing chronic back pain and improving quality of life.

As we say HELLO to March, here are 6 healthy habits to incorporate into your daily life.
1. The key difference between “drinking more water” and “hydration with intention” lies in awareness and consistency. To elevate your experience try adding fresh fruit, herbs, or drinking out of a fun glass to make hydration feel like a treat.
2. Incorporate a practice of expressing gratitude while exercising/getting movement in. Focus on how your body moves and feel grateful for its strength and mobility during those movements. If working out outdoors, actively appreciate and take in the scenery, sounds, animals, etc. This enhances the enjoyment during your movement, increases your motivation, and helps reduce stress.
3. Ever feel like your mind is racing from the moment you wake up? Meditation doesn’t have to be this “perfect” practice—it’s about taking a few minutes to pause and breathe. It can really help you manage stress and stay grounded throughout the day.
4. How much time do you spend staring at your phone or computer? Between work and social media, it’s easy to get caught up in endless scrolling. Reducing screen time, especially before bed, can help you sleep better and feel more present throughout the day.
5. Going out for fresh air is not only good for our body but our mind too, we feel lighter and better after getting some fresh air! It is such a small way to boost your health and feel great too.
6. Establishing a routine is crucial for maintaining good mental and physical health, as it provides structure, reduces stress, improves decision-making, fosters a sense of control, and allows for consistent positive habits ultimately leading to a more productive and fulfilling life. Most importantly: Do what works best for YOU! Everyone is unique and needs/wants a different routine.
