An open-mouth posture affects how a child breathes, grows, and develops. When the lower jaw drops, the tongue is pulled down and back, narrowing the airway and reducing breathing efficiency. Over time, this can influence jaw development, facial growth, and even sleep quality.

If you notice your child resting with their mouth open, snoring, or struggling with sleep, it’s time to look deeper. Schedule an evaluation with an airway-focused dentist and support proper jaw and airway development.

Pacifiers have a dual relationship with infant airways: they can provide immediate, short-term benefits by helping maintain upper airway patency through forward tongue positioning and are associated with a reduced risk of SIDS. However, prolonged use, particularly beyond 6 to 18 months, has been associated with adverse effects, including narrowing of the maxillary arch, increased mouth-breathing patterns, and changes in jaw and facial development that may compromise optimal airway growth.

For this reason, timing, duration, and weaning strategies are important considerations in supporting healthy craniofacial development and long-term airway function.

Many chronic symptoms like restless sleep, behavioral challenges, and even frequent illness can be connected to the condition of your airways. The earlier we recognize these patterns, the more we can guide growth, support proper function, and create lasting change.

Seek an airway-focused dental evaluation and take the first step toward turning illness into wellness.

If you’ve noticed mouth breathing, crowded teeth, snoring, poor sleep, or developmental concerns in your child, it may be worth looking deeper. Seek out an airway-focused dental provider who understands the connection between facial development and whole-body health.

Occasional noise during sleep can happen. But habitual snoring is often a sign that a child is struggling to breathe properly at night. Snoring may indicate airway resistance, mouth breathing, or disrupted oxygen flow during sleep.

Sleep is when growth, healing, and brain development occur. If breathing is compromised during sleep, the body can’t fully rest or develop as intended.

If your child snores regularly, breathes through their mouth, or seems restless during sleep, an airway-focused dental evaluation can help uncover what’s contributing to their breathing challenges.

Testimonials like this remind us that addressing the root cause, not just the symptoms, can lead to better sleep, improved function, and a higher quality of life.
