Eyelid Surgery.....Blepharoplasty

It has been said that the eyes are the window to the soul. Your eyes are used to express your mood. However, as we age our eyes often appear tied or angry even though we are alert and happy. Cosmetic blepharoplasty is the procedure to correct tired/droopy eyes.

Who is a suitable candidate for eyelid surgery? Most patients in good health are candidates for eyelid surgery. You should have good eye health as well. Patients with dry eyes can be made significantly worse with eyelid surgery. A modified surgery can sometimes still be done, so be sure to tell your surgeon that you have dry eyes.

All eyelid operations can be done as an outpatient. You will have some swelling and bruising afterward. Most post-operative changes are back to normal in 3 to 4 weeks.

It is important to know that the eyelids are not the only component to eyelid surgery. The eyebrows need to be addressed in many patients. Surgery or Botox cosmetic can help in brow elevation. The lower eyelids often have excess fat and apparent excess skin.

Skin can be modified with lasers and chemical peels and the laxity of the lid can be tightened. The fat of the lower eyelid is removed or repositioned to remove bags and fill hallows.

The shape of your eye should remain the same unless you seek a new shape. Currently an up turned outer eyelid shape is in vogue. I always caution patients on changing the shape of their eyes since fads come and go.

Cosmetic eyelid surgery is not covered by insurance. If your vision is obstructed by your eyelid skin, then insurance may pay for some of your surgery.
