Polo is on for 2026...!👍 stayed tuned!!!
Background
Polo started being played in the late 1980s in Vero Beach. The barrier island community of Windsor hosted matches with Prince Charles, now King Charles, being invited to play by Galen Weston and Geoffrey Kent, Windsors founders. In 2000 George Kahle along with Peter Busch and Charlie Replogle were instrumental in transplanting the Polo matches to Pointe West and then the Polo Grounds, a community where large homes look out upon the Polo field.

Club manager and pro Gaston Rodriguez grew up in Argentina near Hurlingham, possibly the most renowned polo club in the world, where he learned the game from his father and some of the best polo players. In 1993, when he was 15, Gaston started to accompany his father, professional polo player Remigio Rodriguez, to the U.S. for the Florida season. In about 2003, the annual visit became a permanent move, and he spent several years working for and playing with Charlie Replogle, patron of the Vero Beach Ocean Grill team.

Along with King Charles other notable players have included, the late Sunny Hale, Tommy Lee and Dawn Jones, Adolfo Cambiaso and Tim Gannon of the Outback Polo team, Lolo Castagnola, Hope Arellano along with members of the Gracida and Merlos polo families.

Low to medium goal fun, friendly, family polo is the focus of the VBPC with a special emphasis being placed on bringing along junior players who have achieved great success around the world.Winning tournaments and awards where ever they go including the Avendano in Palm Beach and playing for the USA in New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Argentina and elshere.

Every Sunday game and tournament is sponsored by local and national business's and or local charities such as One Sotheby's International Realty and SPECIAL EQUESTRIANS. Each game has a fundraising element.

At every game hundreds of tailgaters enjoy polo at the Vero Beach Polo Club with professional polo announcer Dawn Garvey Redman calling the games and educating those who new to Polo about the rules of the game and it's history. Dawn "The Voice of Vero Beach Polo" has been on the microphone since the very first game in Windsor.

The motto of the Vero Beach Polo Club coined by long time club patron and player Frank Evans is " FUN, FRIENDLY, FAMILY POLO" for both players and spectators alike. Sunday matches at the Vero Beach Polo Club are welcoming, exciting, accessible and a fantastic way to see why the Game of Kings is still the King of Games.

A bit of Polo history and an interesting story...

Tommy Hitchcock

Born in Aiken, South Carolina, he learned the sport of polo from his parents, Louise and Thomas Hitchcock, Sr. Tommy Jr. played in his first tournament at age 13 and was part of the Meadowbrook Polo Club that won the 1916 U.S. national junior championship.

During World War I, at age 17 Tommy Hitchcock joined the Lafayette Escadrille flying corps in France. He was shot down and captured by the Germans but escaped his captors by jumping out of the train. On foot, he hid in the woods during the daytime then walked more than one hundred miles for eight nights to the safety of Switzerland. After the war, Hitchcock returned to study at Harvard University. Playing polo, he led the U.S. team to victory in the 1921 Westchester Cup. From 1922 to 1940, Hitchcock carried a 10-goal handicap, which is the highest ranking in polo, from the United States of America Polo Association. Playing with notable stars such as Pete Bostwick, Jock Whitney, and Gerald Balding, he led four teams to U.S. National Open Championships in 1923, 1927, 1935 and 1936.

Author F. Scott Fitzgerald loosely modeled two characters in his books on Tommy Hitchcock, Jr.: Tom Buchanan in The Great Gatsby (1925) and the Tommy Barban character in Tender Is the Night (1934). Hitchcock married Margaret Mellon, daughter of William Larimer Mellon, in New York City on 15 December 1928.

He is particularly remembered for his contributions to the development of the P-51 Mustang fighter plane and his tragic death while test-flying one.

A more detailed look at his life:
Polo Career:
Hitchcock was a 10-goal polo player, a status he maintained for 18 years from 1922-1940 (with one exception), according to the Olympics.com.
He won four U.S. Open Polo Championship titles and four Westchester Cup titles.
He was inducted into the Polo Hall of Fame in 1990.

Standing above the inverted Ferrari 250GTO he has been driving is American Tommy Hitchcock III. The race was the May 19, 1963 running of the Nürburgring 1000 Kms. and the Ferrari is lying in the “ditch” of the famous Karussell. Hitchcock had been going too fast and had spun entering the banked inner section, mounted the steep inside bank and then rolled off upside down.
