This week we’ve been discussing scoliosis, specifically what type of surgery is used to correct this condition of the spine. It is important to keep in mind that surgery is considered a last resort for scoliosis. As mentioned, this abnormal curvature of the spine usually fixes itself. Other ways to manage scoliosis symptoms include bracing, physical therapy, massage, making dietary changes, yoga, supplements, and correcting poor posture. To learn more about your options for managing scoliosis, take a look at our blog here.

Approximately six to nine million people in the United States have scoliosis, the majority of whom are children and adolescents. Often, this condition develops in early childhood right before puberty. While the spine usually corrects itself, there are certain cases where surgery may be necessary. Spinal fusion is the most common surgery for this condition of the spine and can be performed using two different techniques. Here is a video that covers exactly what is happening to the spine when scoliosis is present.

Scoliosis affects a reported 2-3% of the population, and the majority of cases are diagnosed in children and adolescents. This condition is defined by having a curvature of the spine that is sideways by at least 10 degrees. More often than not, scoliosis either corrects itself or is treated with a brace. But in some extreme cases, surgery may be necessary. Scoliosis surgery is recommended for individuals with a curvature of the spine that exceeds 45 degrees. There are two different methods of spinal fusion used to treat scoliosis: anterior and posterior. Today’s blog takes a closer look at what you can expect from scoliosis surgery, including when it may be recommended and what the typical recovery period looks like.

Scoliosis surgery is often used as a last-minute resort to help treat a curvature of the spine, which happens in 2-3% of the U.S. population.
